My '06 (6sp, off road) has symptoms of bad u-joints. High pitched noise sound when getting going, vibration when stepping on gas at higher speeds. The Haynes manual and everything I've found online shows a u-joint in front and a u-joint in back of the driveshaft. Mine seems to have something else in the back - presumably that's a CV joint? The boot seems to be intact.

Should I just remove those bolts just like if it were 4 bolts and u-joint? Then just replace the front u-joint and hope that fixes the problem? Or am I about to do something stupid and/or waste my time?

Thanks!

I have a 2013 that is a little different, but I think that is a CV type joint as far as I know. Pretty sure you are going to have to take it to a shop to have it removed and a new one pressed. I installed upgraded Spicer greaseable joints in the front propeller shaft and output from the transfer case to rear shaft. Anyone please feel free to jump in... my 2 cents.

you remove all those bolts and do your front joint..you can try to move the front one around by hands, you'll know right away ..it should be very stiff or grabby..make sure you put some locktite on the bolts ,the blue stuff (medium) is good enough, they don't need to be super tight or they will snap or strip.
