Hi guys, first post here, I bought a 2006 S xterra 4x4 about a month ago and got a little spooked at reading about the issue with getting coolant stuck in the transmission. I'd rather this not happen and was wondering what precautions I can take or what modifications I can do to keep this from happening. Thanks in advance!

The immediate precaution action is to by-pass the tranny cooler in the radiator. Takes 15 -30 minutes to do. Find the how-to sticky for it.

If you read up on the SMOD curse, you should have seen the warning to do the by-pass. Don't wait, do it now.

Longer term, to regain the transmission cooling the radiator provides, you should replace the radiator with an after market unit.

Some have left the tranny unhooked from the radiator and just added another cooler but you have to figure how to fit and plumb it in.

OK thank you, I did some research on this and what it look like is most people just by pass the radiator and leave it that way. On the second generation isn't there also a tranny cooler that is stock? Can that just be connected so that you don't have to get another cooler?

2nd Gens cool the tranny via the radiator and a cooler (in front of the AC condenser). So if you leave the radiator out of the tranny cooling loop, you loose some of the tranny cooling capacity.

If you tow, you definitely need the full cooling of the radiator and the cooler. If you do 4WD wheeling, you also need the cooling of the radiator and the cooler.

Others who have added another tranny cooler will have to answer that. I did the by pass last fall and just replaced the radiator this past week.
