Its most likely stronger then it looks, That welded wire is tough stuff.
This would be more then adequate for most peoples needs. I say this without having a close enough look at how its welded together, so it could be a POS in real life but from what I know of the material used, it would work just find for most peoples needs.
Things I would change, corners welded together where they notched out the for the bends but that would bring the cost up and for what this is it is most likely not needed.
Remember what our roof racks are, plastic, thin aluminum, small screws fastened into barely adequate nutserts. In fact the nutserts are the weakness, screws are adequate.
The strength of our OEM roof racks is interdependent on all these parts distributing the load. That basket will be dependant on however you attach it to your roof rack.
From what I can see from the pictures it should be just fine for most peoples needs. It is ugly.
