I just bought 3 of these second hand off FB Marketplace, going to restore one completely as a good working unit first then work on the others. I was out over the holiday and a guy had one and I was rather impressed. Anyone have one?

They still make them new but expensive as hell, got three for a total of about 70 dollars, two of them work as is but damn the are crusty as crap. I鈥檓 gonna strip them down to bare metal clean the fuel cells and the burners, and I am not a green person so I鈥檓 going to paint them black with BBQ grill paint. Also great for SHTF prepping!!! I鈥檓 a bit of a off grid junkie

The hinges on the side shields were pretty bad and the ones for the cover so I drilled out those rivets. Makes it easier for stripping the paint anyway, so here are those pieces in progress. Stripped them down to bare metal, first coat is black rust converter sandable primer which will help fill in some of the dents, dings, and little micro fracture cracks. I still may decide to try and find a Coleman green matching paint to try and get it looking like classic Coleman stoves. Stripping the main body is going to be a pain but worth it in the end!

I have 2, small and large. I've had them since the mid 1970s and I use one everyday to cook on, since I no longer have a stove in the house. You can get the parts on eBay. Great stoves!

Do you use camping fuel or just regular unleaded gas? I鈥檝e seen YouTube videos of people using regular gas but it apparently makes them dirty and you have to clean them all the time.

I'd stick to white gas unless it's marked "Duel Fuel". My experience with regular gas is bad. I had a new Duel Fuel lantern that I tested regular in. It burnt out the first time and it was new. It was suppose to be able to burn it. The older ones used white gas such as Colemans Fuel. It does burn cleaner. You can get a propane adapter for those for about $20 on eBay. That's what I use to keep from pumping all the time. It works great and don't have to use the heat up valve either. Just turn on, light up and cook. I cook daily with mine.

OOOHHH, there is a propane adapter? I don't like propane since it requires more space for my long wooding excursions which is why I was so impressed with these dual fuel ones. A gallon of coleman fuel lasts forever according to the guy that I met my last camping round, and it sure as hell beats cooking over a fire all bent over and crap.

Soaked and stripped one of the fuel cells, cleaned all the valves, generator, and replaced the seal on the pump. Time to get some red VHT and bring this part back to life.

Thanks! Acetone really eats through the paint but it evaporates so quick you basically have to drench it and brush it off at light speed. I then soaked the rusty spots in this Rustoleum rust dissolver gel stuff, then blasted it all off with brake clean. Now drying the coat of rust converter primer stuff, the to find a matching Coleman Red spray paint! I actually just came back from Lowes getting a decent bright Coleman green鈥. And totally forgot about getting something red鈥︹. This getting old thing sucks

Finished descaling and priming the case, after getting the crud off the bottom I see this one was from 1972! There was so much rust where the model number was, I thought about fixing it but left it for character. Once the primer dries for a few hours I will do the green over it.

That looks really good as base coat. I'm sure it'll look really nice when you're done, character and all.

Interesting thread, too!

Thank you! I figured my progression of things leading up to me getting an Xterra deeply surround my love of getting outdoors and camping, so in a round about way this is about my X :p and I鈥檓 just about done with this, I went out and got the Red I needed for the fuel cell and I might be able to get the rest of the body painted before sundown.
