The dealer sez I need the ATF flushed. I have 48k miles with mostly street driving? Should I do it? How much should it cost with an aftermarket local shop? What fluid should I use?

I have DIY on the cabin and regular air filters and oil changes every 4k and new tires. Anything else I need to do?

There is a 19mm plug. Remove that and let it drain out. Once it is just dripping, plug it back up. Take a long funnel and locate the dipstick tube. Pull the dipstick out, and insert the funnel. Use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, and put 4 quarts in. Let the ATF drain down for about 10 minutes or so because there will still be ATF in the dipstick tube. Next, with the dipstick out, jump in and start the vehicle. Check the level with the vehicle running. 4 quarts should be fine, but buy 5 just to be sure.:)

No, it is shifting fine. I am just a girl and dont know when to change the tranny fluid. Please advise.
I did my transmission drain and fill at 60k (what the maintenance manual said). I am a Gen 1 owner, not a Gen 2 like you. You should check your owners manual for Scheduled Maintenance and it will tell you when it should be done. Please let us know if you figure it out.

I used Mobil one synthetic, at 60k

took exactly 4qts. I drained/refilled, drove about 25-30 miles to mix it all up, then repeated the drain/refill... mine is a gen 1, you should check capacity on yours. I think they are the same, but better to be sure.

Mine however was having some problems with overdrive, that's why I did the additional drain. it's better than ever now, 10k miles later... shifts like she's new... even pulled a 12' u-haul trailer with it for 265 miles...

at 72k I'm going to drop the pan and do the filter too... added peace of mind...

Generally speaking, regardless of what the manual says, automatic transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles.

DO NOT have it flushed, I have heard horror stories from flush jobs... a simple drain and refill via the drain plug is sufficient for the first change. the next one you probably should change the filter.

Welcome
I need to change mine also.
Call around to various shops and ask them what they charge. I would think $75 to $200 depending on what you want to refill it with. Pretty sure those quick oil change places will change all your fluids cheaper than the dealer would charge to do just your trans.
