Okay so I replaced the bearing in my distributor within the last few days. (2004 v6 non S/C) I marked the position of the rotor and the bolt placing on the distributor. I got the distributor back in the exact position. I grabbed a timing gun to get it to 15 degrees, but every time I try to adjust, my markings are way off. So far to the right in fact I can rotate the distributor all the way clockwise and the dont touch the markings.
I've tried unplugging the TPS and trying that way but I can't get it to adjust.

I haven't done that on the Xterra but the last time I had problems like that I printed out the service manual section and followed it step by step. In that case I had made two mistakes, one was not having the engine in the correct position before installing AND I had left a connector connected. So not only was the timing off because of an incorrect install but the computer was trying to adjust the timing.

It's a little more than just pulling the plug on the TPS, there is a little more to the process from what I recall. I'd consult the factory manual. FSM's are downloadable here for free;

It's also possible you are a tooth off.

What bearings did you get? And what made you replace the bearing? My distributor has been replaced like 5 fucking times in less than 3000 miles and every one I pull out is "crunchy" when you spin the shaft.. is that bad bearings?!

Looks like I was off a tooth. Jacked with it again this evening and I can put it to 10 degrees. Crappy thing now is the stupid bolt hole is starting to strip and won't let me tighten the bolt all the way.
Beef tits: Mine was hiccuping at idle. Did regular tune-up stuff first. Pulled the distributor and it was like the bearing was sticking some. Found a thread on here about going to Napa and the 6000-2RSJ bearing. Worked it off myself and put the new on. Idles smooth as dolphin skin now.

Nice, I will check that out.

I stripped my bolt hole too. I got a longer one from the hardware store and it seems to work pretty well.

I took one of my "failed" distributors apart to find that the cause of the crunching noise was NOT bad bearings, but small metal shavings that had gotten into the rotating shaft assembly. I cleaned it up and have it ready to go on when the next one fails :)

Not sure where metal is coming from.. new dist or somewhere in engine? I will cut open my oil filter next time I change my oil and see what is in it.

After driving some 40+ miles everything seemed ok. The idle was a bit low. I ran the codes and the CAT isn't ready. It has a P0420 that is pending. No CEL light. Wondering if I should drive it several move miles and see if it clears out and come to ready. Wonder if the ignition timing is still off a bit.

I think stock idle is around 600-700. Timing will effect idle. If you did not set it per the Nissan FSM, I'd suggest it. There are some pretty specific steps to ensure the compute is sending signal for base timing when you adjust it.

CAT isn't ready? Not sure what that means. Did you clear codes? They don't clear on their own.

Hope this helps.
