My son in-law has a 2008 xterra and all symptoms point toward possible Thermo control amplifier, thermistor, TCA..etc I have heard it called several different names. There are simple instructions for testing and changing it, but only for an earlier model Xterra. This is the link ....

When I look under the glove box for his 2008 it looks different. Would appreciate any assistance with step by step instructions on how to handle the thermistor on a 2008 Xterra.

The sensor is in the evaporator box in the dash. Only wires that run to the coils in the dash.

You don't need to test it with a meter. Waste of time.

Jump the harness wires that feed the sensor, if the AC stays on with the harness connector jumped, the sensor is bad.

FYI, I almost spent a ton of money on my 17 year old system. Thank god I don't trust mechanics and figured out how to fix this. In every AC system, there is a minute leak of refrigerant over time, this minute leak keeps the seals on the compressor from drying out, all systems do this. My system got to the point with the bad thermo AMP that I was getting bogus control on my compressor that kept me from getting a full charge.

I installed my new sensor Thursday, AC works better than the day I drove it off the showroom floor.

I'm not entirely sure the later models are as prone to this failure so before you spend or waste money, do some testing and research. Hundreds of first gen owners got taken to the bank by dealers and shops for this stupid issue. Eliminate every thing possible before throwing money at it. I did and am happy with my freezing cold 17 year old AC system.
