I have a 2005 Xterra that has a trashed tranny. Up to what year are transmissions interchangeable without modifications?

Any replacement transmission that isn’t pulled from your exact model may require reprogramming for proper function. This 5 speed was in a lot of vehicles. The differences in software may be noticeable or not. Not sure if that qualifies as a modification or not.
