Hi Everyone,

New Xterra owner and visitor here. We just got the car and so are a little unfamiliar with it. The battery has been discharging when we drive the car. The car dies but restarts after a jump.

A voltmeter test of the battery shows it charging at idle 14.3v Idle with lights and everything one 14.0v
The battery shows a charge of 12.6 at rest
The battery doesn't dip below 10v when cranked

I checked the fuse block in the Engine and Passenger compartments
(I wasn't able to pull the 120A battery block, is it supposed to come out?)
All of the fuses looked fine both compartments.

The Alternator, Battery and Starter were new last year
The Negative post on the battery was shot so I replaced it.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks,
Dave

Sounds like alternator not charging enough under load so could be the alternator or the voltage regulator inside the alternator. Even though it was new last year I'm guessing it was a reman unit and not every alternator is reman to same standard so not uncommon to have a failure in short amount of time.

Also check tension of alternator belt, sometimes even if it looks tight might be deflecting too much and slipping at higher RPM (when driving down the road).

Thanks for the advice! Still fighting this. Will post back when I get it sorted.
