What is the purpose of the crankshaft sensor on a 2000 Xterra 6cyl?

On other cars, the crankshaft sensor tells the sparkplug when to fire. But the 2000 Xterra has a distributor cap. So why does it have a crankshaft sensor and what is it there for? The Xterra seems to run fine even though the crankshaft connector is disconnected at the moment.

Service engine light is on because of this.

Never mind.. I found the answer that I believe ...

The crankshaft sensor on 2000-2004 Xterra and 1998 - 2004 Fontier is used to catch misfires. Having a bad or disconnected crankshaft sensor wont hurt the engine.
