So the 4x4 doesn't work on my xterra and I never used it anyway. Is it possible to remove the front diff. And axles and put 2wd front hubs on it?

2wd and 4wd xterras get pretty similar mileage. There probably wouldn’t be a great gain in getting rid of your 4wd. It may even cost more than repairing it.

I would just remove the driveline from the transfer case

Yes.

You'll also want to pull the CV shafts and front driveshaft, or wire them up so they don't flop around or fall down and drag on something.
