Hit Rut - Huge Bang - Suspension Issues ...

Hit a rut on the way home --- heard huge bang --- got out of truck and see that rear suspension has shifted back and down ---- rear tires moving but rubbing against mudflaps. I nursed it home but am thinking I should get it towed to the garage. Broken spring? The rut wasnt that big and I wasn't going very fast. Advice

Is it one side or both?

get under it and look... check the leaf springs mounts/shock mounts/u-bolts....

if you moved it enough to be rubbing, it should be fairly obivious what is causing it.

Towed to a garage may be a good idea as your brakes may be compromised.

If the U-bolt clamps broke, etc...there may not be much holding things together, and you can have a quite dramatic accident continuing to drive it. After that, for the suspension to crash, and let the axle shift to the rear, the front leaf mount can break, or, let go if the last leaf (With the loop) breaks, etc.

The accidents you can have are still dramatic though, but slightly less spectacular.

More than likely, if the rear tire has shifted, you broke the leaf spring center pin. Cheap fix providing nothing else broke a center pin is roughly $8 depending on where you go.double check your brake lines ,leaf springs, and shocks checking for fresh scratches or breaks.
