Took the 2004 xterra in today for a rattle noise and got a call that the distributor is going bad. They want $600 to change it. I think I am pretty mechanically inclined and asked the guy if it was hard to do. He say not hard at all, it just has to be done right. I think I'm gonna tackle it if I could get some good instruction. Does anyone know of a good write up?
1. Remove the Dist.
2. Remove spark plug #1 (looking at motor left side closest to you)
3. Install new dist as close to the same position as the old one. (don't install the rotor or cap)
4. Put a long screwdriver down in the hole where you removed the plug.
5. Turn the crank pulley till the screw driver comes all the way to the top. (Top dead center)
6. Install the rotor pointing TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK and install the cap.
7. Install the spark plug.
8. Install the wires to proper connections on the dist.
9. Start the truck. If no start repeat 2-8
10. Get a timing light a set timing to 10*BTDC. ( i might be wrong with this setting so double check)
