That depends on what you are using them for.
I have roof mounted lights because where I drive the grass is many times 3-4 ft high. If I had lights on the grill guard it would shine into the grass (as my head lights do) versus over the top of the grass which is where I need to see. (yes, I have to stop every 30 minutes and clean the grass out of the radiator so the truck doesn't heat up)
If you are doing more slow trail riding and looking for rocks, ruts, etc than lights closer to the ground will be what you are looking for.
