I have a 2002 Xterra. It started and I pulled out of a parking spot then it died. Tried to start again and it turns over but no start. Replaced the fuel pump and the spark plugs. Distributor cap, rotor and timing belt are all good. tested and it doesn't have spark. I don't know what to check next?
So when you crank the engine with the distributor off you can not see the rotor spin? Sorry if that is what you are saying above.....just want to make sure.
Ok so you are getting no spark because the rotor is not spinning, simple as that. The distributor is run off the drivers side camshaft, camshaft is driven by the timing belt which is in turn driven by the crankshaft.
Could be a few things causing the issue.
The gear on the end of the distributor could be broken/sheared rounded off. Unlikely but it could be the cause.
The camshaft could be broken in two....highly unlikely.
The timing belt could have snapped or stripped a bunch of teeth....very likely.
The crankshaft could be broken in two.....very unlikely.
My money is on the timing belt or the gear on the end of the distributor. Pull the distributor and see if the gear and shaft are intact. If they are it's the timing belt in my opinion.
