1st gen vs 2nd gen

which is better? if you want to buy a vehicle that has everything you need and everything you dont, and live and wheel with it for the next 5 years, which would you have?
just a discussion thread, im curious what people think about the engineering of them, how comfortable one is vs the other, and which is better to build

If your going to be wheeling and beating up your rig i would get a first gen but for comfort the 2nd gen is better and is more of a daily driver, but you can still go wheeling in the second gen ( i know i do). You can also look around and find plenty of other peoples opinions on the matter

I have an 04 so I'm a little biased, but I didn't care much for the look of the gen 2 when they came out. I've always liked the gen 1.5 the best. For me X's don't really seem to be made for "comfort" per se, but more of rugged meets daily driver. So with the newer features and added "comfort" of the gen 2 it seems kind of like putting lipstick on a pig, for me anyway, and I like the pig as is!

Just my opinion

if you have the money, get a gen 2... A gen 2 with the titan swap and 35's is a very very sweet machine, has plenty of power, and clearance to do very difficult trails, it the opportunity ever came id swap my gen one out in a minute lol

After owning both, 2nd gen is the way to go... more power, feels bigger, and more comfortable.

I like my 1st gen a lot and will prob keep it forever but power wise, I'd go with the 2nd gen. But like ryandrew said above, IMHO, I like the look of my 03. The 05 to present just look kind of cheap. The back and sides are ok but the front is boring to me. Square headlights and nearly a wall of plastic :sly: I like how my 03 has all kinds of curves and the headlights are round. It just looks more busy. If I had a 4x4 like mine, I would make it a muddin machine but I only have a 2wd and a pml and some tires I'd be completely fine. If the 4.0 was in the 02-04, oh man phew one happy dude sometimes I wish I would have gotten a 2nd gen because its bigger and has an awesome engine but just don't like the style really. No offense to the 2nd gen owners I like all xterras obviously sense I'm in the club lol. My 3.3 is just fine to me. Having a couple of mods done to it and with about 200 HP, I'm good. 119k and countin

I personally Agree. I like the 2002-2004 Body style the best,

If you are looking for power then go Second gen. If you are looking for Excellent engineering with alot of capabilities go First gen.

Personally I would rather spend 10K on a First Gen with EVERYTHING and make it even more mine then spend 12K for a second gen with barely anything on it. limited options.

^^^X2! I also have owned both. I loved my 1st Gen and Love my 2nd Gen. The 2nd Gen has a lot more room and IMO overall, just better all around.

I am a biased 2004 owner...but I never cared for the gen 2 body style...it just seemed too bulky and big to me...I think the fender flairs look odd. I like the front bumper lines better on the 1.5 gen than the 1st gen too.

Never been inside one though...I think the 2004 xterra does lack some comfort and interior pizazzz...but it works for me!
