Check Engine on/off thermostat?

Hey guys!

I'm new to the forum, glad to be here though!
I have a 2001 Xterra with about 156,000 miles on her. Car has been upkept well.
No major issues. I was driving home from work a few days ago and the engine light came on solid. It came on while I was getting gas, so I checked the cap when I got home...the light stayed on for a day so I had it checked at an autozone. Code that came up was due to the thermostat...I have had no problems with the car overheating and my heat works in the car...was driving the car around for two days after...went to the store (planned on getting car serviced on Saturday) and the engine light was off and hasn't turned back on...any idea why this would happen?

Thanks for your help.

Thermostat may have been stuck open or closed. A CEL will be thrown if the coolant takes too long to warm up. It may have been temporarily stuck, but something to keep an eye on.

Also, get the actual code from them, not the description.

Thanks, I am still going to get the car serviced. The thermostat has never been replaced. The code they gave me was P01126 I think.
