too much oil in X?

Driving into work today i get a check engine light
its an 03 X with 170K on the clock.

i'm a little obsessive with this so I havent had a chance to pull a code.

However 11 days ago? I put in a quart of oil as the oil was down pretty low.
after which when i drove it the day after i smelled some oil but it dissapeared very quickly.

Either way I put about 200 miles on it since then , now the check engine light is on

I figure I'll pull the code at lunch at an auto store, go home drain the oil and put in some new oil , hopefully clear the code by disconnecting the battery. and hopefully that will be that

is this reasonable? or could I have cause a larger issue by putting too much oil? that simply draining and refillling wont cure?

again I donthave the codes pulled yet so I'm just extrapolating here

Too much oil won't set the light. Find out why the light is on first.

dont make it a habit of putting too much oil in your xterra unless you want to replace the rear main seal. never done it myself, but I hear its not an easy fix.

X2 on the proper filling of the X. The X's Rear main seal usually is the first to blow when the engine has too much oil. I have never heard of oil setting a CEL so Let us know what code you get so we can get it back on the road for you.
