are you having issues or are you just doing research? You might have better luck over on TNX ( thenewxterra.com) because they have more members with newer Xterras.

I'd put my money on a loose heat shield. Pop the hood and play around with stuff or have someone jump around on the back bumper. It shouldn't be too hard to chase down.

Check to see if any of the skid plate bolts are loose or got cross threaded and might be allowing the thin stock skids to snap & pop.
Other thoughts are small objects slipped into the cargo rails and are rattling as you drive down the road. I've said it before on another thread but some peanut m&m's about drove me crazy when they got loose.
Otherwise mine has been very quiet..matter of fact it regularly gets compliments of how quiet it is inside.
No real maint issues as I follow the premium maint guidelines. Duct work was getting a little funky before this last cabin filter change but it's all good now.

Oh and never underestimate the sneakyness of other 4x4 drivers, check under your rig for a zip tie. Nothing quiet as fun as diagnosing the tick of a ziptie on the driveshaft.

Traded in all my project cars for a new Xterra, not an ounce of buyers remorse. My build thread
