Service Engine Soon light flashing

I was driving my 2005 Xterra SE this Tuesday, when suddenly the Service Engine light started flashing fast and the engine started to sputter in rythm. It did this several time. The 4WD light would come on sometimes, and the VDC light was on always. I would still have power, but couldn't accelerate. I would shut the engine off and wait several minutes. I would then start the engine and the problem would be gone. This would last for several minutes before it would do it all over again. I've read it might be the MAF sensor or the ITA sensor, or both. Any suggestions? Because this happens so randomly, I can't catch it to get a diagnostic...

blinking SES, is a big deal and you could cook a cat in a big hurry. The code should still be stored.

don't drive it. My dad just blew a piston in a 2005 f250 because he drove with the flashing check engine light. He had the loss of power issue and wierd sounds then the piston snapped and he had to buy a new motor. When it flashes you should park it were ever your at and get it towed to a shop you trust.

I'm no longer driving it. I'm trying to figure out what's causing the problem and how to go about fixing it. I have a shop I trust. Do you think there is a code he can see if he runs a diagnostic?

Had something similar happen to me recently. The service light came on, and the car turned off. I could turn it on if I kept my foot on the gas pedal, and could drive, although very slowly, but was able to get it home. Was worried that I was going to have to send it to the shop and spend a good amount of coin to get it fixed. After some DIY trouble shooting, turned out to be a loose and corroded battery cable. Cleaned it up, tightened it up and it's went right back to working like a champ.

I wish it was a battery cable...lol... I had all that looked at before this became a problem. I also bought a new battery. I just spoke to my mechanic (who is excellent) and he told me it's not a sensor, and that my computer has no code because it is not a sensor problem. He said it's a voltage problem with the computers that causes the truck to run, and that it's going to take some individual testing of the computers to find it. He said he can definitely find it, but he can't tell me if it will be quick or fast.

im having this same issue with my 06 xterra. check engine starts to flash in rythum with the sputtering of the motor. sounds like its not firing all cylinders and the exhaust smells funny. What did your mechanic finnaly have to do to fix the problem. not too costly i hope.
