2007 xterra transmission fluid recommendations

About 5 months ago i bought an 07 xterra that needed alot of love to get it up and running. With no owners manual i'm wondering what recommended auto transmission fluid would be used in it? I may sound ignorant but where is the dipstick and fill tube? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this would get me up and running!

IIRC, the manual to my '05 says it's a sealed transmission and the fluid is supposed to last the lifetime of the X. That being said, I am very doubtful of this and even if it is true, I'd prefer to switch to Amsoil or Redline ATX fluid instead after we hit 50K miles.

That might explain not finding a dipstick. I've had to rebuild this one after it being in a frontal collision so its going to need oil. Our nissan dealership will not release any info as they want me to bring it in so any more info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you dwf.

Don't thank me yet. I've belonged to this forum for quite a while, but as you can see from my post count, I don't frequent it too often. Wait and see if someone else chimes in with contradictory information before you assume I'm correct. Like I said I seem to recall reading that in the manual...but I haven't looked in the manual for about 3 years now.

I'm pretty sure for the '07 it's gonna say Matic J which I believe has been replaced by Matic S. I will tell you this. Nissan says anything other than Matic J in your trans WILL void your warranty and cause performance issues so proceed with caution if you decide to try something else. I know of a couple of people running Amsoil ATF in the 05's on. Be careful.

dezurtrat is right about the fluid and there is a dipstick on the right hand side of the transmission and it should also have the letter of the fluid required.

Yup, forgot I had a pic. Thanks! Also the dipstick is bolted down. You'll need a 10mm socket. They do this to make sure you think about what you're going to ad before you do it.

Hmmm...this makes sense...I didn't think I'd seen the dipstick before....but I wasn't looking in the right place. I'll have to check this out after work.

I just went to the dealer to pickup my hitch wiring kit and figured as long as I was there I'd get an emergency quart of Nissan Matic S trans fluid for my X...holy crap $13.00 though I talked them down to $11.00 that's still some expensive fluid!

Traded in all my project cars for a new Xterra, not an ounce of buyers remorse. My build thread
