Hey guys. I just did a top-end engine rebuild on my Xterra due to snapped timing belt. Just got everything back together. Went to fire it up yesterday, and it started rough but then ran fine for ~25 seconds before we turned it off to fix a water leak.
Today, after fixing the water leak, I went to start it. It sputters its way up to 450 RPM, idles very roughly, then dies. It also dies if the gas peddle is pressed.
It then smells faintly of gas in the engine bay, and there is a VERY faint, very hard to see fume that looks possibly like exhaust.

Factors to consider:
-The battery is completely dead. I've been starting it via boost from another car.
-The EGR valve is crushed in on the top due to a mistake I made installing it.
-Again, it started yesterday rough but was then fine for 30 seconds-ish. The EGR was still bent then and the battery was still dead.
