guess i just gotta go by a book to get the timing procedure,all this thread has done is confuse me more by contradicting methods,love you guys and thanks but kinda going backwards now trying to get an answer that makes sense

If the truck runs fine then you should be ok. I never used a timing light and used only marks like you did. How many miles on the Xterra? That sluggish idle is part of the gutless engines that these cars have. No need to go overkill I am sure you are just fine.

but its only got a measly 193k on it.lol
ive got it set warm at 15d btc and seems fine but starts alittle weird sometimes like timings off,probly fine,i just like stuff set to factory specs.

I got the timing set at 15 deg btc and runs great.Ran so good i sold it last night for 2500.
Moderators can you please close this thread.Just a newbie and cant do it.thanks.id like to close the other threads i have open on the 2000 xterra also.

Came across this thread searching for a solution to my problems, which seem to mirror the OP.

My question is, is it necessary to put the engine at TDC before swapping the distributor? I've seen other posts that say it isn't necessary, and all you need to do is mark distributor position and rotor position to match when replacing with a new one, then check timing afterwards.

Can I get confirmation on this?
