Pardon for the newbie question: what's the big deal w/ alternators? Is this a standard offroad problem? Or is it Xterra specific? I've had ford trucks before- I've always been more worried about water pumps...

I've always packed a spare fan belt, coolant, water, Duct and electrical tape, a few fuses, a box of .45, and jumper cables.

Alternator

Hi,

Seems to be a location problem more than anything, too low in the engine compartment if you ford deep. I am in the the Pac Northwest and I have had no problems so far, but I avoid deep water where possible. But if you can get one cheap at the wrecker and it works it is not a big deal to carry.

alternators generally have probs when they get dirty, not wet, if they are dirty they dont work as well, etc. and can fail

My last truck had a low alternator (02 ranger). The only problem I had w/ water was the belt would slip and squeal...

At least the air intake on the Xterra's is up high!

Omg, the more I read about what you guys bring, the more nervous I am with what I have. I have some decent equipment, but nothing remotely close to what you all bring! And a lot of what you guys are saying, I have no clue what they are or why you would have them...
