Is EGR present on all engines, or just some?

I have been researching a motor swap, trying to decide on a JDM vs a low mileage USDM engine. I began wondering about passing emissions (including the visual test).

I've not swapped a VG33E before, but other JDM swaps I'm familiar with have an issue with passing visual inspections when EGR is not present. Many of the Toyota engines I work with have a place on the head the EGR valve bolts to. If that is not present, it might make it hard to bolt it on. :)

I am putting a new engine in a 2000 Xterra SE. There appears to be an EGR valve on this engine. I also have a 2001 Xterra SE...there is NOT an EGR valve on this one. I know the history of this engine and expect it is the original engine in the truck (can't confirm, without actually getting my eyes on the VIN plate though).

Question is...Do SOME of these engines have EGR and some not?? I thought all US cars were equipped with EGR for emissions purposes? My concern is, putting an engine in the truck that may not pass the visual inspection.

Lastly, I found another post with someone that provided this image (thumbnail). It appears to me that 2001 and 2002 engines may have omitted the EGR valve. Any ideas?

So, I just found a technical service bulletin (TSB) that suggests that Xterra/Frontier manufactured after October 1999 are NOT equipped with EGR. That answers that question. I looked closer at both my Xterras (2000, 2001) and neither are equipped. Also, the stickers on the underside of the hood do NOT indicate anything regarding EGR.
Is it genrally understood all models built after October, 1999 do NOT have EGR. Did they bring it back after a certain point? Do the '02-'04 models have them? What about '05-current models?

I would suggest calling and asking what is required to past the visual inspection part and if they can send you an email or snail mail with that information.

Some jurisdictions will not put that information in writing or it will be worded to encourage abuse. Depending on the response you may not need to worry about passing the visual or you just need to find out what is required. Like other mandated inspections there may be some unwritten way to pass.

For example one justification combined the safety and emissions. To pass you had to make it worth the while of the business doing the inspection and that would vary by location. Shopping around I got that part of the inspection down from $3G to $300 and I changed nothing but where and when the inspection occurred.

Also, I want to make sure it operates like the factory intended. I plan to sell this one once it has a new motor. I don't want the new owner to run into issues later if they are in another county somewhere in the country with different requirements. :)

I have a 2000 Frontier and definitely have an EGR. It's not a CA model.

Weird. Do you have the 3.3L V6? This should have applied to all 2000 Frontier and Xterra with V6.

Check out the Technical Service Bulletin attached...

Yep, the 3.3 turd. I'll have to check the build date.

Interesting...Thanks for the reply.

Anyone with 2002 or newer have EGR?
As I recall some 2000;s have them some do not. Later 3.3L have them but not the SC models.

Some threads with more info and sampling of models and years that have them. If switching engines the ECU must match the original configuration, meaning if it cam from the factory with an EGR the ECU ill be looking for an EGR.

Canadian Xterras don't have them, which made me puzzle for the longest time wondering what the bolt hold on the back of the intake manifold was for ;-)

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, according to the TSB, 200 models that were built on or after October 6, 1999 would NOT have the EGR system. Year 2000 models built BEFORE that time, would still have it.

I'm trying to determine if the same is true for the 2001 models (and beyond) because I also do not have EGR on my 2001 model.

Ok, so now I'm more confused... :)
Here is a picture of a JDM engine that appears to have an EGR valve on it (long tube and iron case valve).

Am I looking at this correctly?

Yes it has an EGR
Interesting...so does anyone happen to know if the JDM exhaust manifolds will fit on the USDM trucks? I know that my '01 doesn' have EGR, but if the manifold is cracked on my USDM truck, and the manifolds on my new JDM engine are good, I wonder if I can just remove the plug from the non-EGR USDM manifold and exchange it onto the JDM manifold, removing the steel tube. ??
