I just purchased a one on owner 2002 with only 122K. It is in near perfect condition with the only issues a pulsing in the brakes and a sagging headliner.
I am going on vacation next week and will be dropping off to my mechanic. I am of course having him fix the brake issue. I am also going to tell him to do the timing belt/water pump if it hasn't been already replaced.
What else should I ask be done? I checked the carfax and it only shows oil changes and air filter replacement, nothing else??
Thanks, theres a pretty hard vibration in the brakes. I just bought new rotors and pads and figured might as well put new bearings in as well. I will add your suggestions to the list.
The front wheel bearings have probably never been re-packed.
The front drive shaft has a grease fitting that seems to go untouched as well....and the shaft probably won't telescope in/out w/o some TLC, but is typically fine after that.
The fuel lines/filter are probably old/the rubber line on the P-side by the tank can rot out and start to leak gas when the pump is on, etc.
The #6 spark plug is skipped by many mechanics because they assume you'll never notice/its a PITA to reach.
The diffs, tranny and t-case lubes are probably due for replacement.

I always check the fluids whenever getting a "new" car. Power steering fluid, coolant, oil (as you said), and even the windshield wiper fluid. You'd be surprised how much it's needed until you have none!
OH and don't forget the ever important blinker fluid
I have gotten lucky so far. I picked up yesterday morning and drove straight to work. By the time I got to work the vibration was nearly gone in the brakes. It had been sitting all summer at this little corner car lot and I guess a lot of rust had built up. I will pull the wheels this weekend and see whats going on.
There is a sticker under the hood saying the timing belt was changed at 112K! BIG WIN!
So as of now I am down to the headliner. I got three price quotes and they were $300, $325 and $350. Right about what I figured. I am very happy with the Xterra. The interior is literally PERFECT. Not even a sign of wear on the seats or carpet. EVerything works, and it is driving great. I paid $6200 for it. The dealer was asking $7850 so I bargained down based on the brakes and headliner and he didn't know if the timing belt had been done.
So far so Good. THis is my second Xterra, had a 2010 that we traded in last year on the family car. It was a long year without an X in the garage!
I googled headliner replacement and found a an older couple who worked together out of their truck. Great reviews online so I gave them a call. They came to my house and replaced the entire open-cell foam with closed-cell foam and new headliner for $200, lifetime guarantee. It took them about 1.5 hours and did an awesome job. Couldn't be happier with them. They said they do a LOT of XTerras.
