Can I still drive my Xterra after...

Towing my 2001 4x4 MANUAL across country with all my stuff in a Penske.

When I disconnected the drive shaft and was securing it I accidentally pulled it out and about 1/3 - 1/2 a cup of fluid came out before I got it back in. Two questions:

1. What fluid is this? Transfer case or differential?

2. Can I still drive the Xterra temporarily (to run errands and then get the fluid) or will it be seriously damaged?

Due to time constraints am hoping I can drive the X for a day or two when I get into down, then replace the lost fluid this weekend.

Thanks for your help

Ok great, thank you Kelly.

I used several bungees to hold the driveshaft up (right above the catalytic converter?) and a few more to hold it IN to the driveshaft so it doesn't pop out. Have done 1200 miles so far and it hasn't budged.
