06 Xterra-when you put it into drive it begins to roll and it seems as though the tranny occasionally momentary binds or drags, sounds horrible as if its attempting to hit reverse while it does this you can see the gear indicator on the dash flashing between D and P, no slippage-just horrible momentary jerks-binding. In all forward gears I can hear a sporadic audible click in the tranny pan area that sounds like a solenoid and I believe that is actually reverse attempting to engage-stops in neutral and reverse. The The OD Off light is on but it appears as it has a sporadic signal-can not turn it off when engine is started.
Does not bind in reverse but all other symptoms are there.
Radiator has been by-passed and no contamination in coolant or tranny. Ive pulled the valve body looking for possible issues but all looked good.
Code U-1000 seems to indicate communication issue which leads me to believe there is a bad connection somewhere.
Ive also gone through the routine of key on-shift to drive, Od button off-turn key off then back on, move shifter hit button 2 times, move shifter again hit button 3 times. Gives me one series of 1 then 11, then repeats series of 1 the 17 but cant find exactly what that 17 means.
I don't see anything similar to this in threads so I though I would pose the question.
Hey there, I'm having tranny issues with my 2000 as well. Been checking up on different sites and trying to learn about mine too. Similar issues but there are all kinds of videos and info on the 2005 and ups. Seems that the coolant gets into the transmission and vise versa. Causing all kinds of havoc. Check your fluid and radiator to see if either of them look like a strawberry milkshake. If so, you'll probably need a rebuild or replacement. Or at least that's what I'm finding. Hope that helps. Good luck.
I have not seen any contamination, that was my first thought as well. All fluids are clean and clear. I can tell that its attempting to occasionally engage reverse while in forward gears (I have it up on jack stands with emergency brake locked) and when I start it and put into a forward gear it sporadically attempts to engage reverse at the same time-I can hear the clicking taking place in the tranny pan.
Is there a solenoid that would do this if its failing? Would it have to be the TCM or loose connection?

Diagnostic for U-100 can be found beginning on page 104, section AT, of the 2006 Nissan Factory Service Manual here. Run through the diagnostic and see what you can find.

Not the SMOD issue and the diagnostics racerxxl posted answered my 17 flashes (Diagnostic trouble code “U1000 CAN COMM CIRCUIT” with CONSULT-II or 17th judgment flicker without CONSULT-II is detected when TCM cannot communicate to other control units).
All wires/connectors seem clean and secure so Im guessing my TCM is bad-
Anyone else want to weigh in before I buy a $600 part?
I wanted to provide a follow up since nobody has been able to identify this problem. Essentially when you get a U-1000 code or the 17 flashes it means communication problem (TCM unable to communicate), I read a comment of youtube that said that meant my TCM was fried. So I purchased a used valve body that had a Front brake solenoid trouble code and soldered the broken connection on that solenoid (common repairable issue with these TCM I found out) started on it today about 1000AM and its up and driving great before noon.
Answer-It was the TCM.
