2004 Xterra XE front speaker mounting depth?

I'll be looking to upgrade the speakers in the Xterra I just bought. The previous owner upgraded the stock stereo, and it is more powerful than the stock unit... when the volume is turned up you can hear the speakers start to break up.

What is the maximum mounting depth for the front speakers, so that I don't need spacers to ensure proper fitment?

Does anyone have some photos of the stock speakers? I'm curious if they are just 6.5" component woofers,.... or are they 2-way speakers?

What is the crossover point? I don't want to have a gap in any sonic frequencies.

What speakers have you guys upgraded with? Any suggestions?

I was thinking about buying two of these Goldwood GW-S650/4 6-1/2" Poly Cone Woofer 4 Ohm. The crossover point would be around 5000Hz, which may be too low.
