I am about to perform surgery on my 2004 X with 125k miles. I plan to remove the plenum and:
1. Change plug #6
2. Change the drivers side valve cover gasket
3. Replace the intake manifold gasket to stop a years-old coolant leak
While I'm in there, what else should I change, replace or fix? I read the knock sensor should be done (not exactly sure what that is but it seems important) but what else should I do since I don't remove the plenum every day?!?
I'm planning to do this job over the thanksgiving break when my daughter and her xterra are home from college. So, I haven't completed it. But, I went to the gates hoses website and entered my VIN to find the hoses that fit. I have studied the engine, FSM diagrams, and videos of this repair and have ordered the following from Amazon: Gates part numbers 18460, 18461, 18462, 22518, & 28410. I think this should allow me to replace all of the coolant hoses except the ones that would be easily accessible with the intake on.
It will really help if you have a 1/4 drive really long extensions and socket that will fit the hose clamps to put those 2 hoses back on behind the intake.
gasket match all your intake plenums and cyl head intake ports. moar pawr!
