Before arriving at the forums, I made quite a few stupid purchases and paid for some retarted repairs. Let's hear your story. Here's mine:
First-K @ N FIPK- did this 2 days after I got the X. Why was it stupid, because I was just going off of the brand and not going with the concept. I just got a K @ N HAI(hot air intake)
$70 oil change-Paid Speedee this price duromg the winter on top of paying $30+ for oil and $12 for the filter
Tornado- I bought 2 of these to "increase the power"
Throttle body spacer-yeah.....I got one...(had one)
entire Gibson exhaust system. Basically I bought the entire system and all that I should have got was a muffler- then I spent $120 for them to weld it on. Now I have a chrome tip that needs some rock rash
AC Body lift-spent the $200 and used hardly any of it
Calmini SL- besides not buying their shocks. this was a stupid purchase. I bought the entire thing, not knowing that a 3" SL could just be accomplished with UCA's, shackles. and an AAL, and I would have done without the sway extensions and the bumpstop extensions
As far as repairs go-I had a shop fix a wheel bearing using 2 screwdrivers for $40.
I paid $50 for an alignment which brought me way down after the SL and then I lifted it back up again
I paid the Stealership $60 to find out what an engine code was when I could have taken it to your local auto store. Nissan wanted $375 to replace a Throttle body position sensor. I googled it and found it for $13 in Canada + $37 shipping. Then I paid a mechanic $50 to install it because "it had to go in at a certain angle". When I got the truck back, The guy just butt connected 2 wires together and that was it. Didn't even need the part. Ever since then, I just get sick everytime I talk to a Nissan tech at my local dealer. Allen (cyclemut) is the only tech I trust now.
So far, the top 5 stupid mods I'm seeing, over and over again, include:
Throttle Body Spacers (Its physically impossible for them to do what they are advertised to do...they do NOT work on OUR type of engine...they CAN work on other engines, hence the confusion)
Rear Sway Bar Extensions/Quick Discos (The rear sway bar ITSELF needs to go bye bye, so any mod to it is polishing a turd)
"Cold" air intakes that don't take in air any colder than the stock intake (You need to LOOK at where the air is drawn from to KNOW if it might be colder...some cheat, and say the CAI = CLEAN air intake, etc.)
Exposed cone (etc) intake filters on trucks expected to go off road where there are puddles/standing water, etc.
Brush Guards (Appearance of toughness, with a track record of a reduction in function/increase in damages....mostly due to how they must be MOUNTED...the mount HAS to go down, in a large arc, under to the frame horns...this makes a giant lever arm, and all that leverage in an impact is too much to brace against...PLUS, that lever arm, hanging way down low, KILLS the approach angle...so the truck can't even get over what a stock X can clear, etc...)
The wife and I went to get the oil changed at Mr. Lube on the Xterra (why because of extended warranty we got with the X). We got sucked in to flushing the cooling system for 99.99 and cleaning out the fuel system 89.99. After it was done I thought what a joke. So the next oil change then wanted to change the drivetrain oil 34.00 for the front 29.99 for the transfercase, and 36.99 for the rear...I thought to myself the X only has 70,000 kms, so I said NO. Then the guy said you should change the supercharger oil soon too for 49.99 or something like that. I said screw you! Later to read that the M-62 is zero-maintenance! The last oil change I did was a Great Canadian oil change and the guy tried to sell me synthetic oil change for 89.99 he claims thats what the dealer recommend, but I have never put that in it. I like synthetic but not spending that much at an oil change place. He also said not to get the fuel servicing done because it wrecks the supercharged models. Is that even legit? I will do that when the warranty has expired. All in all Oil change place piss me off always trying to sell me something I do not need. I get really pissed off when they talk to me as if I do not know anything about cars
i lol at most of the peeps at those drivethru auto service places
i forgot to change my oil before a road trip once(really needed it) so i stopped at jiffy rube, they changed my oil and then told me i really needed my tcase oil changed......

Dumb mod: Magnaflow system for $350 plus shipping. Chrome tip sticks out waaaay farther than stock exhaust tip and is bound to get crushed during a steep angle approach. Now I off road with a hack saw so when it does get smushed I'll be able to lop it off because the engine will loose too much power from the restriction of a crushed tip (most likely).
I should have bought the muffler only, saved myself $200.
"Cold" air intakes that don't take in air any colder than the stock intake (You need to LOOK at where the air is drawn from to KNOW if it might be colder...some cheat, and say the CAI = CLEAN air intake, etc.)
Do you think there's actually ANY significant power increase with, for example, a Volant intake? Or is it all just marketing? I ask because I can't feel any power increase though it does sound cool.
my tires and my exhaust. Now I love my tires but I way overpaid for them at a walmart store..... $900 for 4 and my exhaust is a glasspack which I shouldve just made a straight pipe b/c its still way to quiet.
This question seems to fit in (somewhat)... I'm about 90% sure I have the leak on the passenger side exhaust off the engine... does it NEED to be fixed? whats the best approach? of should I just get the new part?
Well, I did something stupid today. After replacing the lower ball joints and putting in new half shafts, which was not part of the plan, I get all clean up and I have an extra bronze spacer, the one that goes between the wheel bearing and the shaft. I know I put it on the driver's side, but don't remember seeing it on the passenger side.
Not a huge deal, but another 1/2 of work on the truck when I though I was done. Oh well, I need shocks anyway.:usuck:
