Unusually shaped nuts...

I need to remove the two nuts shown in the attached picture in order to install mounting brackets for the front skid plate that came with my new calmini winch bumper. Doesn't appear like it will be much of a problem, but I'm curious as to the odd shape. Anybody know the reason? Anything in particular I should be aware of or alert to? Thanks!

Those nuts have a flange built in to distribute the contact load (like a washer).

The nut also has an odd shape. Similar to the top of a Rook chess piece.

I think those nuts are typically used when a cotter pin is used to keep the nut from backing out. I haven't looked at those specific nuts but that's what I've seen in the past.
