Super Charger Rattle

Hi all,

I have an '04 SE SC 4x4. lately on start-up i get a rattle that comes from the super charger. It does not last long and during normal driving/idling i cannot hear it. I poked around on the forum and the net and from what i am finding the issue is most likely a coupler that is worn in the unit. My X has just about 104,000 miles on it. I had the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, plugs, wires, thermostat, etc done at 96,000. It runs great other than the rattle at the moment.

I will be taking it to my local mechanic to have repaired before it gets worse. He did ask me if i was getting any whining or grinding noise which i am not. so my questions are:

1. is there a better coupler than the stock one that i should use for better reliability, etc? If so where should i get it?

2. Is there anything else i should replace in the unit while its on the bench getting worked on?

3. What oil should i use in the unit?

4. any idea on cost to do it? i know its subjective depending on what going on inside the unit but a ballpark would be good. just trying to get an idea of what to expect.

Any input wold be great. if i am not asking something i should be please let me know as well.

thanks!

I'm not having any luck finding the thread but Google Eaton M62 Coupler and you you will find coupler kits and how to's on rebuilding the snout.

Sounds like the coupler may be your issue.

hey! thanks for the great info. i ended up ordering a new one from the guy i shared the link with. i spoke to him on the phone and he definitely knew what he was talking about and was happy to answer all my questions. he has great feedback as well. I ordered one the other day and should get it in next week. He only uses the best parts, per him, as well as an upgraded coupler. total when done with install will be around 1k (im having it replaced by my local mechanic. im getting a rattle from the old one so its time to swap it out.
