Mechanic is saying that it may be the ECM computer. Would this make sense?

They are trying to find a used one to test.

Possible, it tells everything when to do anything, based on dozens of sensors. I knock the 1st gens for having a simple computer, but if it can't tell a fuel injector to go, or misreads the incoming air volume, then it will not run right.

Took it to a mechanic that specialized in Nissans and he solved the problem! Took about a month but its back to running awesome (knock on wood).

Supposedly it was a corroded wire in the main wire harness that led to the distributor. Strange that it was so simple but I didn't see any past or related issues?

Very strange but glad you got it fixed. At least you know your distributor and MAF are good to go now

take off the intake hosing right before the throttle body and look inside. there is a butterfly valve in there. sometimes it may get a carbon and dirt build up and become stuck in one position. id take that off, get a little bit of carb cleaner, a tooth brush and clean that thing out.
you should be able to with one finger just posh it open and closed its got a very light spring holding it in place. try that. its happened on my old 94 4runner. its happened on my girlfriends saturn vue and my father in laws chevy taho.

My 2000 with 165k is doing the same thing. I replaced distributor, wires and plugs. Ran like new for a month, now sputtering under light throttle, losing power. Any ideas?

I am not the best versed when it comes to working under the hood of the truck. Which sending unit? What lines?
