I'm fan of the modified stock intake personally...for a few reasons:
1) Any intake system that has a cone filter open and exposed in the engine bay is a bad move. Even on my old street car, with no off road use, the cone filter got easily trashed, and even reusable/washable filters are never the same after a few washes.
2) The volant system solves the first issue by putting it in an enclosed box that is not water tight. This helps on the dust and debris from a daily driver type car, but if you off road and are around water, this box will not keep all water out.
3) If you are off roading to the point you are worried about the box being water tight or not, you need a snorkel. However, the first gen volant intake does not have a snorkel adapter.
Thus, my conclusion is: The stock airbox with the resonators removed, and a KN drop in panel filter will offer comparable performance, and better filter protection than an open cone filter, with the option of adding a snorkel later.
