Brake Booster for 2000

Hi, this is my first post. My brother has a 2000 Xterra and his brake pedal is hard. I told him to check the one way valve for proper operation. My main question is this.
Is it a PITA to change out the booster? I looked at it and it seems that there may be no way to remove and replace without the master cylinder being completely removed. Am I correct in this assumption? I would just like to know this before going in head first to remove. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I did a search and couldn't find any detailed info for remove and replace.

The factory service manuals will have that information and can be found here. You are looking for section BR and the booster removal can be found on page 16. You will have to remove the master cylinder.
