JM57 is on a distinguished road
I did loosen the lock nut on the top first. I am also turning clockwise.

I did not hold the bolt on top with a wrench while turning the bolt.

My bump stop gap I did not measure because I could tell I had a long way to go but I can say with confidence the space was at least 3".

Well if that nut is spinning turning the adjuster does no good as the adjuster bolt threads into that nut and if the nut spins you're not adjusting.

Just to be clear adjuster bolt going through the adjuster finger and cross member then you have the adjuster nut and the lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and spin it up the adjuster bolt shaft an inch or so then place a wrench on the adjuster nut to hold it in place and crank the adjuster bolt.

You're probably looking at your lower bumpstops. You want to be looking at your upper bumpstops, which are right below your upper control arms.
