Gen1 clutch and stick questions.

1. How touchy is your clutch. Do the plates engage fairly smoothly or do you notice a bump unless you're very careful with the clutch release?

I had the clutch redone a few months ago, and for a while it worked smooth as butter. Now it seems a little "choppy" if I am not very smooth with the release when the plates engage. I expect it to be rough at higher RPM, but sometimes its a bit jerky at lower rpm.

2. How smooth does the stick work through the gears in the 5 speed?

I have some issues working the stick back into first at times unless I am virtually at a stop. Is there some mechanism that blocks downshift to first above certain RPM? Second can also be a little sticky at times. The higher gears are always pretty smooth.

Based on what I've found so far, the synchro can be touchy, and its best to not try first unless you're stopped, or have at least shifted to neutral first. I was never quite that careful with the last manual I drove. I guess if I'm crawling forward, I should just rev the RPMS and use second.

I just put in a new clutch in august and it shifts pretty smooth. The only time it gets really bump is when i am off roading and have to let off of the clutch fast.

Did you get your pressure plate resurfaced? Some times the heat impressions can cause it to slip.

Shifting is relatively smooth for me also but every once and a blue moon it acts up to where i have to come to a complete stop.
