My center controls is hard to see at night because there is no light. Seems like the bulb in AC/ climate controls are out. How do I take off the center plastics and change the bulb inside if there is one. Anyone had done this issue? Is there a thread on this already I apologise. Thanks in advance.
yes there is a couple of people tried to repair, they sell the led at radio shack for 2dl but so far that i know no one has been able to open it up with out destroying it.
Just to update, you CAN replace the backlight in the climate controls, at least on my 2002 you can. I got 2 incandescent bulbs from http://autolumination.com/74.htm. They are neo-wedge bulbs and come in various colors. I got the blue to try and stick to the same color as the bulbs that I was replacing. The downside is the replacement bulbs are shorter in the shaft than the bulbs being replaced. I am about to buy another set in the LED style to see if I can improve the brightness (right now it's quite dim). But it's better than dark.
You have to remove the whole face of the console. Believe it or not you have to start at the plastic surround to the gear shifter. Remove the knob on the 4x4 shifter. Grip the inside edge of the rubber (it has goop that you will likely get on your fingers in the process) and pull up - it pops right off. Turn it 90 degrees and slip it over the top of the gear shifter. There will be two screws that you have to loosen behind that plus two screws under the radio that you undo to remove the whole plastic face that covers the radio and climate control. It also helps to remove the 4 screws holding the radio in place and get that out of the way so you can work easier.
Doing this all from memory so my apologies if I missed a step or two. If you check out the forums I believe someone posted pictures of the process. The repair manual (also posted on the forums) is a valuable tool to have handy for any work you want to do.
Let me know how you make out. Be gentle with the Environmental control knobs and such. Last time I took it out for work I broke the control for the rear defroster.
Dejablue: I don't think that's the bulb. That part actually might fix the issue I have where the switch went bad when I took the whole control unit apart. But the bulb (which according to CP's schematic is 27135J (and not available from Nissan - at least not when I checked) is only $4 (you would want to get two).
Personally, I like the LED ones from AutoLumination much better. They won't burn out a easily and are much brighter. I've done it. It's not hard, but it can be tricky.
I saw that but when I tried to order from a local dealer they said it wasn't available from the warehouse. I personally like the AutoLumination bulb FAR better. It's much brighter and for the little cost difference, it's worth it.
Scroll back in this thread. I posted it back in 2012.
