Crank Position and Knock sensor

Just picked up an 02 se, non sc, and after 30 minutes I got the ses with knock and crank pos sensor codes. running fine, but not sure if it could be running better since I just got it. Could the CPS cause both codes? Should I change the CPS first and see if it clears both?

Yes, that is most likely your problem. Check the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) wiring if that is good change the sensor, reset codes, the knock problem should go away.

The other problem you have is you paid too much for the car. I would be on the phone with place or person I bought it from saying they knew about the problem and did not tell me and would be asking for them to pay at least for the CKP part.

Just did my knock sensor. No huge notice in MPG ( little better) but however better response yes. Knock sensors do not need to be replaced (unless S/C according to the research here) there are a lot of people on here that do nothing about it. There are others who do the mod ( usually the S/C they need the KS).
Personally after doing the knock sensor I would do it again. Not that hard just a lot time. The EGR value can be a PITA since there is a blind bolt you have to line up with the little bracket .... Kinda like the sixth plug.
By SES you mean that you read the code or that the light came. The knock sensor will not turn the dash light on but there will be a code if read ( what some call a ghost code). Good luck!

I think the light came on because of the Crank pos sensor. but both codes were there. Bought it tonight. Gonna get it done over the weekend. I may just do a relocate on the knock sen if it still needs it. Someone stripped the 5 hex bolts that hold the throttle body onto the intake manifold. Thanks for the help.

Had the ks relocated and the cps replaced this weekend. all codes came back. i am also getting a fueltemp code too. Mechanic says it may be a bad ecm now. Any ideas anyone? Ready to drive it off a bridge.

Hey man, hope you haven't driven off the bridge yet. I'm in (relatively) the same boat. My rig was neglected for so long that I've now inherited a boatload of issues.

I read somewhere (might have been that big knock sensor thread) that relocating your KS can result in a few weird issues. Have you tried disconnecting your battery to reset the codes? The KS code (p0328) won't trigger the lights like others will so you may have to get them checked again.
