I Personally believe that Volant is better since it is the only "sealed" intake. however it is not 100% air tight and I have heard alot of members complaining about it. Volant personally decided they will not fix the few flaws. None the less if you are off-roading or not off-roading it is a beautiful Option. The K&N works splendid as well however it can let water into your engine since it is not sealed.

I have never seen an Apollo kit for the xterra. It has that universal hose with it, but you have to cut it to install the maf, and that leaves no connections for the breather hoses unless you connect the stock intake to the universal hose. If you have to use the stock hose, you might as well just keep the stock setup and do the mod to seal the stock box and have it pull air from the fender.

I really like the filter system on the Apollo kit. i would love to have a custom intake pipe made and use the Apollo to go into the fender and connect a snorkel, but that would basically be paying $200 for a filter and still having to fab an intake pipe.

I'm fan of the modified stock intake personally...for a few reasons:

1) Any intake system that has a cone filter open and exposed in the engine bay is a bad move. Even on my old street car, with no off road use, the cone filter got easily trashed, and even reusable/washable filters are never the same after a few washes.

2) The volant system solves the first issue by putting it in an enclosed box that is not water tight. This helps on the dust and debris from a daily driver type car, but if you off road and are around water, this box will not keep all water out.

3) If you are off roading to the point you are worried about the box being water tight or not, you need a snorkel. However, the first gen volant intake does not have a snorkel adapter.

Thus, my conclusion is: The stock airbox with the resonators removed, and a KN drop in panel filter will offer comparable performance, and better filter protection than an open cone filter, with the option of adding a snorkel later.
