My recently purchased 2000 Xterra has a factory trailer hitch but no electrical connection. What gives?

Hey there TJ, been reading alot of your posts and greatly appreciate your apparent expertise.

We currently own a 2001 Xterra and LOVE it. We need to replace both rear springs and new shocks. Everything is completely stock and we arent off roading at all. We did install larger tires for a better look(LT265/75R16). What do you recommend for shocks and springs.

I've seen a set of springs at General Spring of KC...problem is they have (2)....(1) is normal and (1) is Heavy Duty. What would be close to what we have stock? We definitely don't want to add any rake to the vehicle.

The X has over 265,000miles so we are not looking at long term commitment....maybe a couple years.

Hope this was enough info. Looking forward to your advice.

    Thanks,
    SB

I wanted to thank you for all of your advice on my UCA issue during my SL. They are finally going to correct it on the 19th, I hope all goes well. You had given me a list of things to take pictures of a while back, but I had injured my arm and have been unable to climb under the truck to do that. But when I took it to be serviced last week, they told me my shocks are sitting right on my A arms. So, I will have to check it out good when they are done with it this time. Thanks again. I can never find my old posts,,, which is why I PM'ed you.

I hope so too. Remember how to do the Si spray now though...you rinse with clean water after 'froading, then re-Si it....deep into the slots, not like painting the alternator...spinning it to get the bushes and armature coated, etc...then let it dry, and so forth before using it.

A skid plate that protects the alt from splashes, and spraying the clean alternator with silicone spray before getting it crudded up, works like a charm. I still have my OEM 80 amp POS alternator on the truck, it still works. When I had to drop the skid under it for maintenance, I did temporarily kill it, but, was able to take it apart and clean it, and put it back into service maybe 50k miles ago. I carry spare alts anyway as a precaution too. :)

I see that you have taken your xterra through some deep mud/water, have you had issue with alternators being killed? I have and I am trying to figure out ways to protect my alternator. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

OK, I suggest you do a PML but leave the front ~ 1.5" lower to improve MPG and handling, braking, etc...and if you want the tires to stick out more, just get fatter tires.

In retrospect, yes, but its a royal PITA, the bell housing don't match, the starter won't be clocked or spaced right, the exhaust doesn't match, the cats are different (built into head on one, separate on the other), the clutch master cycl linkage ends up the wrong lengths, and on and on...I would not have done it if I knew how much fab work/work arounds I needed

    Tjuh,

You are the only one who I can think of that may have any insight into my situation. You have mentioned that your truck is an 01 with the engine of an 03 installed.

I have the reverse problem. I have the engine and transmission from a 2000 V6 4wd installed in the original body. That body has gotten to the point that rust can no longer be contained. So, if I find a 2003 V6 4wd with a blown engine and/or tranny, can I swap in my engine and tranny from my 2000?

Ok so the Alcan leaves showed up yesterday. Look like they belong on the back of an F350 Dually. 10 leafs a side...ha. Putting them on today. Went with the 5100 series Bilstein shocks and regular shackles for now. Screwed up the measurements on the shocks (not quite sure how I did that..measured twice?) they have plenty of length but they bottom out about an inch before full compression. Anyway, hoping the new leafs will be correct, Alcan guy seemed to already know what I needed. Gonna just drop off to 4 wheel parts to have them measure another set of Bilstiens. Rest of the rig is basically done, will post some pics. Thanks for your insight...my son is pretty stoked and he got to put down his Iphone for a while and actually learn how to use some hand tools in the process. Probably should have let him measure for the shocks.....

Start thinking about shocks to take advantage of the added rear wheel travel. :D

aawgary - You might want to consider regular shackles, or Revolver Shackles, over Orbit Eyes, for that application. The Orbit Eyes, while allowing the pack to rotate/relieve stress/increase travel, tend to wear quickly under load.

The Revolvers tend to wear like regular shackles, IE: They don't really wear out under load the way Orbit Eyes do.

If you get new leaves from Alcan, you can specify the capacity and lift amounts, and by using 10 thinner leaves or so, they can maintain a lot of the pack's flex.
