I am buying an Xterra for some weekend fun (light towing and very light off-roading -- for now) and also as a first vehicle for my teens to drive short distances.

I'd like to mitigate some of the roll-over tendencies with a minimally invasive lowering kit (if spring compressors will work without adversely affecting handling, that would be perfect).

My question is for those of you with experience doing this, will approx 3" lower the vehicle enough to give it some improved roll-over performance without the other side effects being counter-productive for safety.

I'd really like to avoid a major mod because in 2-3 years when my kids are done with it, I'd like to remove the lowering kit and perhaps do some more aggressive off-roading (I live 4hrs from Moab.....)

You are allowed one account period end of story. If you have lost your password contact a member of the site staff and we can retrieve it. If you need your name changed because you're entering the federal witness relocation program or are being pursued by agents of a foreign powers intelligence service then we can hook you up with a name change. Other then that unfortunately the name you chose is the name you keep.
Users found to have more than one account will have both accounts locked.

I guess this is overdue. Named by the fiance who loves the X, Mudbug doesn't go mudding. The goal of my build is not the standard obstacle crushing articulation but I need (want?) to have a vehicle that can take me to work every day, go 2000 miles with Kayaks, anywhere in between those drive into the woods 10 miles for a middle-of-nowhere impromptu stay, act as a base camp at music fests, find areas without light pollution for telescopin’… general outdoor goodness.

The earliest pic I have for some reason. Truck came with what seems to be the MPG buster kit (had a new exhaust with chrome tip, and a Volant intake. 72k miles and some french fries under the seat as well).

^^I quickly added rain guards, removed nerfbars / mudflaps / swaybar, lost control with stickers

Tires first. MB72's and Falken Rocky Mountains. So far I'm pleased with them.
Bedlined everywhere plastic used to be. Gobi rack and ladder. PML.... forgetting lots.....Put in new shocks recently. Want to fix the front end (thinking about a winch, just not sure I’d use it…). Have some “night light” LED’s to wire into the rear hatch with an always-on switch. I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot, but its an ongoing thread.
Hope you enjoy.

I've got a 2005 Xterra SE that I use as my "toy hauler." I absolutely LOVE the vehicle as it has character and hasn't given me any problems. I've had it since 2009 and now have about 105,000 miles on it. At the 100k service, I had the shop replace the radiator as a precaution (I realize the chance of it going bad was low, but I didn't want to risk a new transmission).

Anyway, I wish it was just a TAD longer so I could fit more stuff in it, including myself. I'm 5'11" and usually sleep in the back (diagonally), and so I'm considering selling it and moving into a 2009ish Pathfinder.

Things I really like about the Xterra:
-Rockford Fosgate stereo w/sub. One of the better OEM stereos I've had in vehicles
-Ruggedness
-MPG/engine (get about 22 on the hwy, which for a truck seems pretty good)
-Towing is a breeze

My questions:

1. Do the rear seats fold completely flat in the Pathfinder?
2. Is there more cargo space where I could sleep back there without feeling quite as cramped?
3. Is the stereo as good?

I don't need the off-road potential the Xterra has to offer, but I do need 4wd. Is there much to gain by moving into a Pathfinder?

Thanks.

I was just told that the shocks on our 2011 Xterra will not pass inspection --- seems very odd at just 15k miles. No hard driving --- never been off-road.

Hi everyone,

I've wanted an Xterra for a few years now, and since my Civic just died, now is the time. My sister has a 2010 X and she loves it, but she warned me about the gas mileage. I got 25-30 mpg with the Civic, so I know the X will be a shock.

I've been waiting for a 3rd Gen X in the hopes that they will improve the mpg. Does anyone have info? Would it have significantly better mpg than the 2nd gen?

There are some good deals right now at Nissan (low APR and cash back), and I had to ride the bus yesterday across from some lady yelling at herself. I'm close to pulling the trigger on a 2012 X, unless anyone thinks that I should wait for 3rd gen.

Thanks,

Hello, all!

I have been thinking about getting an XTerra and am touring this forum for more info; lots to sift through which is always good. Looking for something that will be a daily driver and is roomy for the family, outdoor projects, can haul light-duty trailers, but also off-road capable for those trips to the hills. I've seen a couple of mildly built XTerras and they looked pretty good, no idea why this platform has slipped by me :icon_question: Nothing against Jeep, had a couple Wranglers in the past and although I like the old Cherokee's, not really my style right now.. My dream is an old FJ40 to fit my needs, but realistically, that's just not going to happen because it would be a long-term project.

So, here I am; I appreciate any advice and links offered up!
