: Summer of '09 badlands trip
recon 04-15-2009, 11:06 AM so me and a few buddies and some others from school wanted to take a trip down to the badlands this summer before college, one of them drives a fronty, and the other drives a blazer, and the others are in a collection of heeps.
I figured we may as well set up a convoy or something if anyone else wants to head down with us or meet us there, and figured why not see if anyone from clubx wants to come?
No dates or anything set as it is still early, but more info to come.
470 miles from me...might be interesting depending on the date. Would like to do some photography up there actually.
unconformity 04-15-2009, 11:26 AM depending on my schedule.. i might be able to make it... its 287 mi, 4 hrs 28 mins

It's a great place to get started in wheeling as it's rather pick and choose what obstacles and trails you want. Everything for all skill levels. All terrains too which is why I like the place so much.
buckethead47 04-17-2009, 02:52 AM I probably be up for it depending on date. Its about 4 hours from me.

recon 06-15-2009, 11:27 AM Alright, the set date is now at July 10th-12th officially. Go down friday night, camp out, offroad all day saturday, camp that night, possibly do more sunday morning then head home.
Anyone from Illinois that wants to meet up and caravan down is more than welcome to suggest somewhere to meet grant, myself, and another friend.
DarkKnight369 06-15-2009, 11:54 AM Sucks, that is the only date I cannot go. I really want to pop my badlands cherry this summer.
Silver Dude 06-18-2009, 12:51 AM Just a FYI
Badlands requires that each vehicle have a flag. I guess this is so that your easier to spot on the trail. For example your roaring up a dune and a ATV'er is coming up the other side he might have a chance of seeing your flag.
They sell fancy flags with the badlands logo for $15-$22 at the place you pay your entry fee.
However, you can go to Walmart and pickup a orange fiberglass whip flag in the bicycle section for $3.50. Considering you maybe use the flag twice or maybe once a year...
The flag must be orange and extend 2 feet above the vehicles highest point. It is enforced, I've seen people stopped before.
I still have my flag from the last time I was out with my pickup. I haven't looked into a attachment point on the x yet. Most people use zip ties on the roof rack. On my pickup the flag slid right into the bed rail at the tie down hole. Obviously, a mount up front is more effective. If you ever go to Silver lake in Michigan they require the flag to be front mounted, badlands doesn't. Just something to think about if your bored and considering making a custom mount for your rig.
If your bringing anyone under 18 they need a waiver signed by their parents.
Having tow points front and rear are pretty much necessary.
FRS radios (walkie talkies) are handy while on the trail. "Stop I'm stuck!" "Watch out for the..." You can get a pair of cheap ones for $20-40 at Walmart. Or if you have a CB you could use that if there are other users. I still don't have a CB.
Badlands doesn't allow alcohol anywhere in the park. Which is why most clubs camp the night elsewhere. Though with our mostly under age crowd its probably not a problem.:) The campground is really just a tree less field.
I'm not sure if I'll be there all 3 days as I work Friday. I may leave late Friday and drive through the night to a hotel. But, at this point I know I'm in for sure on Saturday.
Keep in mind Indiana is in a different time zone when planning.

i'm heading to walmart to get a flag tomorrow or the next day, and i have to order a rear tow hook, only have the front recovery point at the moment, if i cant get one in time i will just have to ride around with my tow strap on at all times.
X_TERRA05 07-05-2009, 11:21 PM I don't post on here much, but we got word over on thenewx. I'll be there probably friday night through sunday. It won't be till 8 when I roll into the camp ground friday. Hopefully I'll get to meet some more of the you Midwest X'ers.
buckethead47 07-06-2009, 10:37 AM i cant go to the trip any more. money has been tight
midget28 07-06-2009, 02:49 PM DAMNIT I never saw this ..... owell I guess im spent after MIOBIs 4th of july event. If you guys are ever down for going to the Cliffs in Illinois let me know Ill be in for that if anyone is willin to try the hard stuff.
Silver Dude 07-07-2009, 12:07 AM Yeah I might not be able to make it either. My front differential is out the X. I went to install my ARB air locker Friday and I'm having issues with one of the axle shafts fitting back in properly. The trip would not be worth it to go down in 4x2. Hopefully, the ARB tech will answer my emails and I can get it back under the X in time for the trip as I was really looking forward to it.
recon 07-07-2009, 05:22 PM well 2 of you have ducked out now :P, it'd be awesome if you could make it silver seeing as how you've been there before.
hopefully we get a chance to meet up with anyone that is going. pm me if you have a spot you want to meet.
