dinka07 04-10-2009, 09:36 PM Ok guys I'm gonna start working on a 1977 GMC sierra with my grandfather...I have never worked on a vehicle b4 but he has so I should be fine...we are gonna take the engine out and apart first and replace anything that needs to be replaced...after that I want to do some body work but I have experience but I want to do it all myself as well as interior...this is where y'all come in I need advice on anything I need to know about body work and good brands to use cause I plan on lifting this baby too hehe hope to here some sugestions......I will post up some pics of the truck tomorrow when i get home hehe im at work right now :P
oh I almost forgot...is anyone here selling an engine hoist?
CristofoliniX 04-10-2009, 09:59 PM '77 Sierra?
dinka07 04-10-2009, 10:05 PM yup yup :D I'll post a pic in the AM
Creepy Cruiser 04-10-2009, 10:06 PM Shipping on a used engine hoist would kill ya, lol. Either just rent one, or if I were you, I'd just go buy one from harbor freight for $129 and own it. There are many uses for one other than just the engine, like lifting off the bed or the cab from the frame.
dinka07 04-10-2009, 10:15 PM yeah I would rather own it than rent it :D after i finish with the truck i'm gonna try and work on an 80's camero :D
CristofoliniX 04-10-2009, 11:05 PM should be a cool build, keep us posted with pics.
dinka07 04-10-2009, 11:10 PM will do :D I plan on sanding and painting it myself black and yellow...I want to put a 4in lift with some 33's its already 4x4 it runs just needs a new clutch we just want to put anything we can new in the engine so I can see how things work with it :D so i have an idea cause I plan on doing a camero after the truck :D hehe should be fun :D I can't wait to get started we just need to get the hoist and we start :D
or just park the truck under a tree, rig up some webbing and chains around the engine, toss the rope over a strong limb, attach the end to your X and pull
dinka07 04-10-2009, 11:17 PM hehe sounds fun :D
buckethead47 04-10-2009, 11:28 PM see if some one has one you can barrow that what we did when we pulled our motor out of our race car ever winter to get rebuilt for the next season. and i plan on getting an 80's chevy pickup but im doing the opposite of you... im turning mine into a muscle truck. but i dont have the truck yet.
dinka07 04-10-2009, 11:29 PM thats cool :D we have people who we can borrow from but we don't feel like rushing just cause they want the thing back all fast
buckethead47 04-10-2009, 11:57 PM well your just pulling the motor right? we had this little square frame that uses the bolt from the motor mounts and the engine block sits off the ground. we got ours for like 50 bucks or you can weld one up. thats if the need it back really quick just when you put the block down make sure its in a place where you can work comfortably. and just barrow the lift when your ready to put it back in.i amusing the motor out of its a 350 common motor in 70-80 gm trucks they will be very easy to work on its all strait forward. and if your going to do the bod work your self get very handy with a mig welder on really thin metal. if you plan on doing a lot of body work id suggest finding a place that does i car certification classes they teach you a lot about that stuff and will also teach you what to look for in the welds and all that stuff and bondo will become your best friend.
buckethead47 04-10-2009, 11:58 PM oh and here is a link for more info on i car certification.

dinka07 04-11-2009, 12:16 AM sweet thanks :D god I can't wait to get started I'm all excited :D
buckethead47 04-11-2009, 12:54 AM if you have any questions about welding you can ask me im not an expert but i did spend the last 2 1/2 years studying it. and if you dont have a welder look into miller welders lincon is a good one so is esab you wont need anything bigger than a 250 if your just doing body work. you can find used ones around too id check craigs list and ebay.
dinka07 04-11-2009, 12:56 AM just a question...would you maybe be albe to demonstrate with a video how I would go onto doing this??
buckethead47 04-11-2009, 01:05 AM a video on what welding? i never done the i car thing and never welded on anything thinner than 12 ga. metal. what you you will doing is any where from 16 ga. to smaller ill try and find some videos. im not familiar with body work so im not all to knowledgeable on that aspect of it.
json3904 04-11-2009, 01:10 AM when you get to metal that thin it starts getting pretty scary if you dont know what you are doing and just watching a few vids really wont help you.... i would suggest trying to find someone with a welder and trying it yourself first before you try it on the truck... just some food for thought.. LOL
dinka07 04-11-2009, 01:17 AM haha no worries I have more cars behind my house I can practice on :D
buckethead47 04-11-2009, 01:20 AM when i get my truck i was going to take it to a bod shop to have it done right and if you f* it up more thats just going to be more money to throw at it if its just one rust hole its not bad but if there is a lot of holes id just take it in. it will be a lot less time and it will look a lot better.
dinka07 04-11-2009, 01:27 AM so far I have no holes just some rust it's all in the bed though so hehe I'll prolly spend about 8-11 hours sanding it down :D afterthat I gotta wetsand then wash it and finally start painting :D
buckethead47 04-11-2009, 02:02 AM if its only surface rust all you need to do is sand it down and herculine it
dinka07 04-15-2009, 11:04 PM Ok guys here are my pics

buckethead47 04-15-2009, 11:20 PM i would try and find a replacement hood and maybe the hood hinges too. those might be bent and the body is in decent shape for its age.
CristofoliniX 04-15-2009, 11:24 PM sus. lift?
dinka07 04-15-2009, 11:27 PM hehe speaking of the hood..we used military trucks in our volunteer fire dept and me and my grandfather were coming home from a 100 acre grass fire which was a blast and the damn hood opened and hit the windshield...it was hilarious :D but yeah the body i can just buy replacement stuff from the pick n pull or u pull it...only thing wront is the clutch but we are gonna take the engine apart to do a lil maitnance :D
dinka07 04-15-2009, 11:27 PM are you asking if it has a sus lift??
cajun x 04-15-2009, 11:56 PM wats in her, 305, 350 or maybe 454!!!! yum
timb. 04-16-2009, 12:06 AM any of the older lift companies jackit, roughcountry, skyjacker. all should have new springs and pitman arms.33's lol....think about 35's. you got a great simple older truck. hope you guys know how to weld-you will be replacing alot of rust. grind it away, weld in replacement steel and bondo smooth. when done....trust me HERCULINE the interior and bed if possible. if trail rig....you might want to loose the bed and bolt on a pickup box on the frame rails.
dinka07 04-16-2009, 12:30 AM not too worried about the rust I can replace most of the parts that have it...now I do have a little hole on the floor in the interior but thats an easy fix...as for the engine I'm not sure I think it may be a 350 but I will let you know :D yeah I think some 35's would look bad ass on it :D im gonna re paint her either black and blue or black and yellow will decide later
