ok so my father has the lowrance iway 600c for his truck and its by far the best gps ive ever used and ive well lets say go through alot of units much like a child with a bag of skittles in front of them.. any ways ive been looking around on the market for units that come close to the lowrance since the company discontinued the product.. not enough marketing :( but any ways im looking for something with at least a 5 in. screen, ive looked in to the cobra nav one 5000 and the magellan 5310 and 5340 but they just dont have half the features as the lowrance, i miss the topographical mapping and auto rerouting it offers. so i was wondering if any one has an suggestions on other units or experience with the magellan or the cobra units.

dunno about the magellan or cobra units, but my girlfriend got me a Mio Moov 220 for christmas and it is great...calculates routes really quick, has txt-to-speech, millions of POIs, and is a lot cheaper than most others

speaking of which I was just using mine tonight. Well, actually its my parents, but they never use it. Its a Nextar (X4B), the thing does pretty well. But if your going to buy one, I'd say go with Garmin. They've been around the longest, and I see them a lot in the Fire/EMS/Police field.

ive looked in to the garmin but i dont like that they've stream lined their products soo much that most of the nice features to have are not available, and all honesty garmin is the lowest of the low when compared to lowrance, price is not a factor right now and i dont really care about all those "user friendly" features like text to speech or blue tooth capable or mp3 or photo viewing or a rechargeable lithium ion battery, its going to be staying in the x 95% of the time and used as a gps. i have the audio system to take care of the rest so yeah. but thanks for the reply's

ah i was but the issue with that is their most likely refurbished units and they have a 90 day warranty either through the company you purchased from or through lowrance so...your S.O.L if it goes down.. since my dad bought his directly from lowrance he has a great warranty if it ever goes done at any time due to an electrical problem or over heating its replace or fixed no questions asked or additional costs.

if you are looking for a true gps get a hand held and mount in the X... trailchaser from TNO has one so he can use it for off road and on road... looks sweet mounted in his pathy to..

this one looks pretty sweet

hum ill look in to that but would still prefer a unit that has at least a 5in screen as i noted above also one that would stay in the x. i have no need to take it out in the woods with me hiking or hunting unless they come up with one that has elk herd tracking...lol but then wheres the fun in that i like to do it old school. as for the xog by lowrance ive looked in to that too but considering my iphone has a bigger screen ive kinda ruled that out but thanks for the suggestions.

there is supposedly a program called offroad that will allow you to add topo maps to the tomtom... the site i liked to had a link to the program... that's why i posted it for you..

yeah i read that but im looking for more of a drive while viewing the topo maps, so something thats filled in around your route or built in to the mapping rather than an old school hand held style straight line kinda deal. thanks by the way for the post and the research your doing/did json3904.

Seems like the lowerance is what your looking for. I have had 2 TomTom's and they were both perfect for me. (use them for work) You might want to try lookin into Nav head units. My poineer D3 has a feature that tracks where you have been that way you can find your way back. No Topo's though. I'm gonna check into that "Off Road" feature for the TomTom.

Something else you might wanna look at is the Garmin GPSMAP 60 series. I love mine. I have city navigator and topo maps on there. I have yet to find a hiking trail, city road or forest road that is not on one of those 2 map sets. I have the 60CSX, i hear the 60CS is good as well. It gives turn by turn directions, auto routing, trackback, and all the other standard stuff of a handheld. Only thing is the screen is a little small, but it makes it better for hiking. I have it mounted on my dash and it is perfect! Just something else you can look into.

i do some work with tomtom so i know their gps's inside and out. i use a decked out go 930, but the go 730 gets you everything the 930 has and is cheaper because it doesnt have euro maps (i deleted mine anyway) i don't use the bluetooth on mine, but its there if i ever decide to get fancy. the best thing i like about my device is the POI sets i downloaded, and it alerts me to red light cameras. the routing is fast, but i also keep my maps very up to date. to be honest, as long as your maps are kept up to date, you'll be fine. tomtom uses tele atlas mapping and garmin uses navteq. that's the big difference between the two top players, but other than that, its just a matter of preference for the different interfaces

hum ok well ill have to look in to the tom toms i ruled them out a while ago but im starting at home base again so ill keep a look out may just have to risk my luck with a lowrace iway 600c...still cant find something that comes close to the things it offers. FYI it has Navteq maping also. oh question do the tom tom or nuvi or magellan have internal hardrives? or just sd cards?

The portable TOM TOM GPS units are easy to use and quite accurate.
