Anthony 08-25-2006, 07:53 PM If you're in Spencerport, NY tonight, don't call 911 or I might show up at your door half asleep to save your life.
Yup, I'm on duty with the ambulance (6pm to 8am) and I'm BORED. :schlaf2-big:
Of course, now that I said that, we'll probably get a bunch of calls! :crutches:
taylor 08-25-2006, 09:59 PM Small world. How long have you been a medic? I'm a paramedic for 9 years now here in St. John's, Newfoundland Canada. I won't mention the Q word .( QUIET ):schlaf2-big:
Anthony 08-26-2006, 04:33 AM I've been an EMT for 5yrs. I was Certified First Responder before that. (Very similar to EMT, but not allowed to use meds or transport)
And thanks for the Q word, I guess I better put my boots back on ... I have 1.5 hrs left in my shift and we havn't gotten any calls yet.

EMT's can use meds? Any limitations? Just curious, my neighbor is an EMT...
Anthony 08-26-2006, 08:33 AM We can administer Oxygen, and the following meds (as long as they are actually prescribed to and belong to the patient): Nitroglycerin, Alubuterol, and Epinepherine auto-injectors.
In NY we cannot administer IV's or any other meds, altough there has been talk of allowing aspirin.
taylor 08-26-2006, 08:58 AM Here in St.John's Newfoundland Canada, we have come along way from the old days when we were referred to as Ambulance Drivers ( I HATE THAT TERM ).
We now administer Nitroglycerin, Salbutamol, ASA, Epinepherine, Glucagon and Dextrose 50%. We also do Intravenous Therapy, Intra Osseous Infusion along with Defibrillation. We're currently trying to get some kinda pain control meds as well. Post a pic of your Crest if you can.
Anthony 08-26-2006, 09:05 AM Oh yeah, we also do oral glucose. and defib. Paramedics (EMT Advanced) can do MUCH more.

cornfed 08-26-2006, 05:50 PM I was a EMT in Iowa and the closes hospital was 50 miles away. Some fun back in the day. Also a EMT in Ohio, and West Virginia. Its hard to stay out of once you get the bug.
Hats of to you guys and gals.:wink-big:
supercharged 08-26-2006, 07:10 PM Yes to sum it up.....It is the age of the mobile ICU, Now ON-STAR offers all those secondary emergency services, like calling home for you to tell your family you are running late, what to do if someone is chucking, why I even reported to them when the roadside park is out of .....shall we say "paper products":auslachen2-big:

Thats interesting about carrying glucose, my oldest daughter has a new job working the 12 hour night shift at Brown printing. She hasn't been eating right, and yesterday morning, passed out while getting out of her boyfriends car. Had to run her down to Waseca general where they found her glucose level was at about 60.
Ouch.
One of my kids has diabetes (insulin dependant), and also passes out if his sugar drops....very scary.
Anthony 08-27-2006, 08:33 PM I was on a call once for a diabetic emergency. The guy worked in a Bread distribution warehouse... anyway we gave him oral glucose and he was ok for about 10 mins and started to get loopy again, so we gave him more... same thing about 10mins... He said he hadn't eaten, so we had to give him some carbohydrates. My partner (genius i swear) says, where are we gonna get food to give him?, I don't have money for the vending machine!
I look around me.... about 4 BAZILLION loaves of bread... um HELLOOOOO. hahaa
