I recommend Boston or Memphis, but of the two you listed I would go with the Alpines. I've never been a fan of JL full range speakers. Don't get me wrong, they have awesome subs, but the JL full range speaker always sounded kinda tinny to me. The Alpine have a little more warmth in their tonality. I'm actually planning to put Bostons in my '08, but I'm working on an amp installation first. I'll have pics up as soon as I'm done.

I myself am a fan of Memphis speakers as well. Had them in two of my hondas and they were great. The 6 1/2" 3-way models I had came with directional tweeters that you could aim and at the time all Memphis speakers came with a lifetime warranty. Not sure if it still applies or not.

I have the Alpine SPR's in mine and they are great.

I'm not a huge car audio person though. I wanted to get some Polk Audio like I have in my Maxima but they were nearly impossible to find.

I've never understood the craze with amps and subs and all this stuff in a car. I'd rather have a nice home audio setup. I have a Klipsch setup for my home theater, as well as computer and a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones.

I'm pretty sure Memphis still carries a lifetime warranty. Which is why I'm considering them. :)

I agree. I spend way more money on my home theater set up than the audio in my vehicle; but I also spend more time listening to music in my X than I do at home, so a little investment in car audio goes a long way.

If I'm not mistaken, those were the Bostons I was looking at putting in my truck. They should fit with no problems, although I'm not sure of the mounting depth. Some people have had to use spacers in the back door speaker opening to push the speaker out and give it enough depth clearance.

first you should get the radio cause by replacing speakers that can handle more watts your going to need more power to get them to sing good but out of your choices that you mentioned the aplines would be better

would also help if you mentioned what type of music you listen too? you could just get the separates and a 10 or 12" amplified bazooka if you don't want it REALLY loud. love the new alpine head units. you will need spacers for the bostons. got lazy on the 6x9's in the back and just cranked the screws which pushed out the outer panels 1/8" :). f' it. ebay has great prices on boston components.

YOu should never buy a speaker based on what other people like.
All the speakers you listed are good build quality and would last a good long time if treated well.
So the only real factor here is how you think they sound.
Your ears are different from everyone elses so only you can be the judge of what sounds good to you.

I suggest you get to your closest dealer and take a listen. buy whatever you like the sound of.
Bring some CDs and play the speakers with both just head units and through some good amps. Don't use MP3 files or low quality ipod files. everything used in listening test should be wave file quality or better.

Of what you listed I can tell you from experience most people will like the VRs the most if done in blind listening tests. I did this alot when I worked at tweeter. I sold a ton of them. Don't mix and match. At very least stick to the same brand for both the front and rear. I never even mix series of speakers although I would not waste money on rear speakers either. I don't sit back there and I keep everything faded to the front for imaging anyways. Plus if someone in the back complained about not having upgraded speakers, they can get the hell out and walk.

also for everyone else. The reason you have a kick ass car system is because if you don't live alone and you like music then its about the only chance you get to really crank some tunes. Not to mention, at home I have 20 other things to do besides just listen to music. In the car, I have nothing else to do.

There are a few good sticky thread on the mazda forums car audio section I moderate. Check out the rear speaker discussion thread and the $1000 and $500 challenge threads. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11

i heard somewhere that you should stick to a speaker that matches your HU. this is my personal experience. I had all pioneer in my X, then when i blew out one of my 6x9's i went to get replacements but they didn't have the pioneer 6x9's so settled for some alpine 6x9's and they didnt sound as good. Still have them and they are still kickin but i noticed a drop in sound quality. Tried messin with the EQ on the HU but just can't get them quite right. Hope that helps.

The headunit and speakers do not have to match in brand.
However they do need to be the right impedance. Some speakers (infinity does this) have 2 ohm versions. You should not connect those to a head unit directly. They need an amplifier.
As a source units all headunits should sound about the same when all of the boost circuits and the EQ stuff is set flat.
However to my ears, I have often liked the sound of eclipse a lot but I have never trusted them for reliability after all the problems I had with there stuff in the early days.
Alpine always sounded full, but a little distorted. Pioneer sounds a bit weak but accurate.

the only way to get the best sound quality from speakers is to amplify them. the range a head unit is pushing is around 20 watts rms. upgradeable speakers can handle 3 times the amount of that power and thats what they need to get the full effect

2 questions:

1. how much power are you going to run both now and in the future?
2. what type of music do you listen to?

My opinion is a little different than others on this board. I have used all 3 of these brands in the past. I have had great luck with both Boston and JL, not so much with ALpine especially when running higher power systems. I would strongly recommend you use the same series of speaker (TR, VR, SL, etc) in both the front and rear or you will hear a tonality difference, the voicing will be different.

just my nickel's worth. buy what sounds good to your ears, not somebody elses.

I have also been contemplating some Boston Acoustics. I had them in the rear of Starion until I finally blew them and replaced them with Focals. I am also considering Focals for the X. Carfiguy makes some very good points and I also agree on BA and JL. I tend to listen to a lot of progressive and 80s music so my music has to be crisp and bass tight. The Starion has an Eclipse CD7200 head, MBQuart/Focal, JL microsub (8"x2), and a early gen PPI6600 amp driving it all and I can go from Yes, to Duran Duran, to Spock's Beard and have it all sound fantastic.
