Hey guys, it has been a while since I last posted something. I have been busy getting ready to head to Baghdad. Anyway, I wanted to get the X ready to drive if my wife needed it while I am gone 6 months. So I had the timing belt changed (yes, my 2000 X has a belt not a chain) and I had the tranny fluid flushed. I got it back last night and now the valves are tapping.
I called my dealer and they said the tech that worked on it was out and would be back tommorrow.
Do you guys have any idea what it could be?

Do you have oil pressure? Did you check your oil level?

Jsut came back from deal and the oil is full. They say it has a crack exhuast manifold. Of course they want to give me a deal on it for $250.00. I told them to kiss my ass my x will never be at that dealer again. I took a perfectly good running x to them and now I got the crazy sound coming from the engine bay.
Edit 5 hours later.
After I cooled down. I took the heat shield of the right side exhaust manifold and of course I found about a 6 inch crack in the manifold. At first it looked old to me. Then after a few minutes of looking at it I think it is fairly new. I am not sure, but I think my dealer cracked my manifold.

On purpose?? Yeah, I am kind of anti dealer as far as maintenance goes. I think they did it so I would have to spend another $300.00 with them.
Anyway I looked at it last night and I think I am going to replace it myself or get a local guy to do it.
My X is never going to Jack Ingram Nissan again!

If it is the manifold for sure, you may just wanna say fcuck it, and bite the bullet. Frozen hard to reach bolts will make you wish you had.... :pullout:

I don't think the dealer could have cracked the manifold. But they should have found it when they had it for service. This is a common problem with the 3.3L engine. It's beacause of the design of the manifold and how exhaust pressure goes forward and then makes a sharp turn toward the rear causing high pressure in the bend. These things are not easy to change, even for the dealer.

For that particular job, I would doubt the dealer would crack it on purpose to get you to pay for the service. I wouldn't think they'd take the time to actually crack your manifold when they can more easily take you for ride with something like "we found metal particles in your oil."

Hey guys - I'm new to this format. I have a 2002 X SE Supercharged with less than 70,000 miles on it and have/had both of these problems. My valves are tapping right now and am not sure what to do with it. I have also had the manifold replaced - cost me around $600 at a Meineke shop and it sounds much better. Love this car but its not loving back.

Those cracking manifolds are very common. Maybe you didn't notice it before but were listening more closely after it came back from the dealer. Just my guess.
