This is a cross-post from NOAS from the event coordinators:

***This is an open run. You need to be at least 18yrs old (or have a parent with you), be responsible, and own a Nissan to attend. That is it!

Coal Creek - May 15-17

http://www.coalcreekohv.com/

Alright everyone…..we are 2 months from the Coal Creek run in TN. I for one have never been to CC, but I will be there this year without a doubt. I have a sneaky suspicion that this years run is going to be an awesome run with many attendees.

I’ll do my best to post up useful information for everyone here. If I miss anything, please let me know and I’ll update this post accordingly.

I’ll also start a thread or two to discuss camping and attendance.

Everyone please do what you can to be at this years CC run! I hear very good things about the trails at CC and I for one would like to have a large NOAS presence at this years run!

Thanks!

As Brian (Houdini) said, this will be his first time to CC and if you want to see one very sick frontier, his is the one to see. This will also probably be the big debut of Tuff's xterra with the SAS and I think even Daniel (Tameroflions) has a little surprise he's going to be wanting to show off.

This is an open run so you DO NOT have to be a NOAS member to ride. The trails range from mild to wild and there is enough at CC to keep everybody busy and having a great time for the whole weekend. Repeat: this is not just for modded rigs! Stock rigs are welcome and rides are grouped by experience and rig capability so don't fear that you will be outmatched on the trails or in over your head. Attendees will be seperated into groups according to modifications (or willingness to test your mettle).

We are wanting to get an idea of the possible number of attendees so we can hope to reserve a large area of the campground strictly for us Nissans.

So let's hear it! Who's comin' with me?!

Want to or will go? hahaha

It only costs you the entrance fee to the park. You don't have to be a member of NOAS to come along. The only requirements are a nissan and an urge to get it dirty.

This park has ruined me as far as comparing it to others I've been to. Average park around me is hardly over 1,000 acres and 10 to 15 miles of trails. Coal Creek is 78,000 acres and over 160 miles of trails! And it has enough of a variety of trails to keep everybody busy all day with their rigs from the bonestock to the custom crawlers.

Yeah I'm stoked to finally see it person. The only thing that would make this run better was if Richard finished his fronty and had it there.

The Rattle Rock challenge sort of started as a joke and then it was a dare and now they both seem to really be looking forward to it. It's gonna be awesome!

RedX is supposed to be coming too!

i take partial blame for richards rig not being ready...sorry!
he has become insanely busy tho, like he hasnt even finished my bumpers yet...so its not totally my fault.

im pumped to see brock's rig, i doubt ill actually be wheeling w/ him tho. :)

Drake
03-18-2009, 11:12 AM
Probably not as will the majority of us there. They are going to work this out to where it's more of a spectator event to see them attempt this for those that want to park and watch. It won't be restricted to just the hardcore group.

As for Richard, yeah he's friggin' slammed. He's got his rig he is trying to build, his girlfriend's X he is re-SASing pretty much and then the flood of slider/bumper orders he gets. That's why I backed out on getting him to make my rear-carrier. He's just got too much on his plate and I can put the money I would have spent on that to better (more like more responsible) use anyways.

Once again the man has screwed me out of another NOAS run. I've been prepping for this run for a month now. I've only gone wheeling once this whole year because I was saving my rig to really open it up that weekend. This is setup to be the largest NOAS run in a long long time with a LOT of people and I'm going to friggin' miss it. I'm now scheduled to be working in Orlando for two weeks around that weekend.

You guys better take a lot of vids and pics!!!

Man I've stretched the calendar every which way possible and it's just not going to happen. There's only two of us with this company that do this type of work and he is already scheduled to be in San Diego and there's just nobody else we can send. Plus this is a chance to get in with another client which leads to more travel for me and the more I travel, the more coin I bring home and I need every penny.

I am so bummed out about this it isn't funny. CC is my favorite off-road park EVER and judging by the forums at NOAS, there are going to be several guys dusting off their trail rigs for this run that haven't wheeled in a while. This could turn out to be one VERY BIG trail run.

It's not a total loss for me though. My local club, albeit all jeeps and tacos, has several runs this year so I should be able to get some trail miles in at some point.

Yeah man... that last trip was good times for sure and I was looking forward to seeing your X in action but with the times as they are, gotta do what I can to keep myself employed. It doesn't look like I'm going to make Harlan in August either but I'm hoping to make it to URE in October. I was supposed to be in Denver that week but since losing that client, Denver is a no-go now which doubly sucks because I was hoping to meet up with Soccerbrace, Alex T. and a few others from Ronin and hitting the trails out there.

With the industry I work in though, things can change in just a matter of minutes but this is a solid client and usually when they book a show it's a definite thing but you never can tell.

I know Stevin (Tn4x4) has to wait until closer to then before he knows because of work schedules but if he isn't working, I bet my paycheck he'll be there. There will be quite a few from the area attending but couldn't tell you names right off the top of my head.

They divide up into groups according to mods so that no one gets in over their head unless they do it voluntarily. I've wheeled CC many times bone stock with no skids and had a blast.

If you've never been to CC and want to wheel your X then THIS IS THE TIME TO DO IT! You'll be surrounded by a bunch of good people with a lot of knowledge and they can help you do anything from spotting you on the trails to helping you fix your rig if something breaks.

I mean I was literally counting down the days to this run since February. That's how much I was looking forward to this run.

That's REALLY going to piss me off if he comes and I can't be there. I bet he will though because I think he has his girlfriend's xterra ready for the trails now and I bet he's ready to show it off. It looks friggin' sick! Too bad his frontier isn't finished yet.

As the other question pertaining me attending....I more likely won't know til the very end but right now, things aren't too good at my jobs I'm at and I'm hesitant to ask for any weekends off right now since people are getting laid off here so I may have to just ride it out and see what they schedule me for....if I'm off a day of this, I'll attend and wheel but if not, I might stop by after work and say hey in the late afternoon or something but will more likely not wheel tho.

Just how I stand on this right now.

As for me, If I don't get the things I need to get done on my X by the time NOAS comes around, and if I'm not working that weekend, I may have to ride trail bitch. So many things that needs to be done as replacing steering system, tires, some electrical mods that I've disconnected but have yet rewired back up, redo my tcase skidplate, few several things. I'm having a hard time finding a free time to do those things nowadays with more hours on my jobs.

Wow, this is gonna be an big turnout! I'm still uncertain at this point due to work and my steering system in serious desire of upgrades.

Here's my plan for now since I'm uncertain at this point:
If I have to work that weekend, I will come by in the evening and say hey and check out your rigs...its the least I can do.
If I'm not working and my steering system hasn't gotten to me/isn't repaired and few things by then, I'm out as for driving the X but will ride trail bitch with whoever has an open seat for the day.
If I'm not working and steering system is repaired along with other things, I'M IN!

That's all for now.

Hey Drake, I've been following this and my feelings are bitter-sweet. I'm just getting back back on my feet (long story... short), and my X can't yet even make the trip to get there. On the other hand, checkin' out the link and following the thread has really lit a fire under my ass to get serious about the first major mod so I CAN go the next time.

Drake
04-22-2009, 06:23 AM
Don't put yourself in a bind financially or otherwise to get mods done so you can make a run. Mods are optional and the group is divided according to capabilities whether it by limited by mods or willingness to test the limits. There's going to be a few stockers in the group and CC offers plenty of trail options for any type of rig there.

Glad to hear you're on the up and up though.

Stevin... I hope you can get your steering fixed in time and you get off from work to make at least one of the days. There should be groups going Friday, Saturday and probably a few sticking around to run Sunday. I'm not dead set on which day I'm going up but I'm thinking I will probably go up Thursday night and come back at the end of the day Saturday.

Here is the campground where we are trying to keep the group together. I highly recommend calling ahead and reserving a space if you plan to stay overnight. There are a few low-budget motels nearby as well.

If you don't reserve a spot, it is a first come first serve basis. There is also another campground a few miles away also but I don't believe it has the amenities like this one.

The park is not rented out by NOAS so the park is open to anybody wanting to come. He can come and ride but he won't be included into the grouping so he may want to bring somebody else and preferrably someone with a capable enough rig to tow him out if necessary.

Coal Creek covers 78,000 acres of privately owned land and I don't even think "renting" is an option. There are access trails to CC all around it from several directions. Over 160 miles of trails of all difficulties. Having enough room for our group won't be an issue. Finding enough trail leaders/tail gunners might be a different story though. I know the southern half of the park pretty well. Tuff and Andy know the whole park rather well and there's a few others like Sean (Bluegrassen) who are pretty familiar with it too. Daniel, don't be surprised if you're asked to lead a stock/semi-stock group. With the numbers we're seeing so far, There's going to be at least 4 but probably 5 groups of up to 8 rigs each. I'd much prefer to keep it to 5 rigs per group but it's all a matter of who shows and who's willing to do what as far as difficulty goes.

Drake
04-28-2009, 04:54 PM
You won't be grouped strictly by mods. It will depend more on how far you are willing to push it. If I'm able to get up there to wheel all day Friday, I'm probably going to be stupid and try to run a few trails with the "big boys" and take it easy on Saturday (if I'm still able to drive it.... lol).

Other stocker/semi-stockers coming from NOAS would be:

Mr. Plow - '06 Nismo Fronty - lightly modded with M/T's
EKupathy87 - mild modded pathy
TheRealDoug - stock something
Nitroman - stock '95 hardbody
Canteen Green - fronty on 31's

And those are just the ones I know are stock or semi-stock. There's several others that I'm not positive on and there are those who's rig is their daily driver (like me) that may not want to test the full limits. There's several guys who's rig appears super-modded but it's nothing more than armor. Unless you're running a locker, anything else is "semi-stock". I would call mine semi-stock or lightly modded. The difference is that I'm dumb enough to try things I really shouldn't be trying. hahaha

I'm going to talk with Brian (Houdini) and see when they are going to start planning routes. I know you aren't that familiar with CC but you would be a good tailgunner for a group since you have the M/T's and the better clearance over most. Not saying that you will be one though but if you want to it would probably help. We don't want to deny anyone or force anyone onto trails or in with a group when they want to try something else. The turnout may end up being so big that some of us may start out in the north end of the park and work their way south while a couple of groups start out at the main entrance and head north. I think that would be cool to do on Saturday and then all the groups meet up below the windmills for a huge group photo that afternoon. But then again... I'm just along for the ride, whatever the group decides is what I'll do. I've never been to CC and had a bad time.:)

im up for being a leader, does that mean im choosing trails or will that all be decided before hand? if someone else wants to do it, let them, but if all else fails, ill do it.

ill probably be up there to wheel saturday only, maybe a bit on sunday, but i think my buddy(the same guy that came w/ last time, schmucker) has to get back kinda early on sunday. so i would love to see the windmills, since we didnt get to last time!

Drake
04-28-2009, 05:25 PM
I'm waiting to hear back from Brian and Brock now as far as how they will decide the trails and the groups.

In my experience, the trail leader is like the school teacher on a class field trip. They are the eyes, ears and guide for the group. They dictate the speed of the group as well as spotter for the obstacles when needed. And since you're in front, nothing but ass shots of you on the trails. hahaha

Yeah me trying to burn my arm off because of that dude in the ford really screwed that whole day up but I think the windmills will be doable this go round.

Oh I forgot to mention that Mark is planning to come with his Amigo. It's like going to be his last time to wheel before he moves out west. If anybody wonders why an Isuzu is allowed on this run, Mark is a founder of NOAS. He's welcome regardless of what he drives. Not to mention it is one kickass friggin' amigo.

He left early that day because of his dad. Apparently off-roading wasn't his thing.

Brian said that his "tentative" plan is to just play around and explore Friday. There probably won't be that many people there to justify making a big deal out of planning for it. The ones that are there can group up however and just play all day. Friday night once the majority (it seems) arrives, they will start the "planning and grouping" for the Saturday run.

i have a buddy w/ a fronty that might be comin up w/ me too, he would probably wanna be in my group, he doesnt seem to want to push it too hard.

also, when yall are doing the planning, can yall make out a list of all the CB channels that the groups will be on, so we can keep updates between groups, incase cells dont work.

Daniel - Cell phones will not work up in the mountains....I've looked in mine, Justin's, Whitney's cell when we were scrambling to find reception when Drake burnt his hand....only way of communication was by CB

If it's necessary for you to be a TL then yes somebody will fill you in. It will depend on how many rigs are there and who's willing to do what with them. It could end up being multiple stock groups just so we don't have trains of rigs on the trails. We'd like it to be around 5 rigs a group and 8 at the absolute most. CC has so many "moderate" rated trails but as you've seen when you went, some of them can border more on the "difficult" and "extreme" side. #22 is rated moderate but so is the nasty one with the waterfall (the one Tuff was spotting you via cb and sarcasm lol) and the two "gorges" where you slashed your sidewall.

i have a buddy w/ a fronty that might be comin up w/ me too, he would probably wanna be in my group, he doesnt seem to want to push it too hard.

Awesome! This run is looking like it's going to be friggin' huge! At least compared to what I've been to.

also, when yall are doing the planning, can yall make out a list of all the CB channels that the groups will be on, so we can keep updates between groups, incase cells dont work.

I'm thinking there will probably be one universal channel for all of us and then a "side channel" for the individual groups. The universal would be more for emergency extraction/repair and locating everyone at the end of the day. I get good reception throughout most of the park with Verizon. The only time I lose reception is when I'm deep in the valleys. Remember, I was texting you when I nearly flopped at the bottom of the hillclimb on #22.

Sorry I lost track of this thread.
I do have air tools but not the best for breaking tight bolts loss. I usually break the bolt loss and then use the air. Let me know when or if you want to get together. If it comes down to it I can always get my neighbor to help or do it myself with a floor jack.

Drake

Why are you buying crap from Richard? You know he's actually pretty good at custom fab stuff. :mocking:

I haven't even begun to start getting ready. Found a blown boot on one of my TRE's but I figure I'll just try and destroy it on the trails and swap it out then or when I get back.

Other crap I have to do:

Balance two of my 33's again
Coat my alternator
set up my spare CL and tie-rods so I can just swap out the whole unit if I bust something
re-organize and repack my tools and whip up some kind of storage in the back
Get my cb re-tuned because somehow it got jacked up and now I can't transmit squat

I've also got a guy that's supposed to be giving me his crossbars off of his roofrack so I can fab up a hi-lift mount without drilling into my good rails.

And I really don't see a lot of that happening before I get there.

TN4x4Xterra
05-08-2009, 12:22 PM
No luck on CL from Richard as of right now....he did get back with me though.

But I got so much crap to do too!

Re-do my Tcase skid
Replace my CL and determine cause of steering problem
Get alignment
Coat my alternator
Get some 33s
Rearrange things in the engine bay
And some things I can't remember off my head.

But more likely, I won't have the steering issues fixed and other things on the list done by NOAS so I'll be riding shotgun with Daniel or Sean in his 2nd gen X if either has open seat and it'll be on Saturday only.

Drake

I'm starting to get antsy! I'm a little irritated though. I don't have a garage and we've averaged almost 1" of rain every day this month! I can't get anything done on my rig and it's pissing me off. I do have an idea for something I'm really hoping I can finish before CC but the weather is really going to hamper that.

Checked the long-term forecast and it's 40% of scattered t-storms beginning Friday through Sunday. Then again, I've NEVER been to CC and it not rain. Get a few of the big boys on #22 and that hill climb could reach a new difficulty level.

This is gonna be one wild weekend!

:rocker-big:

P.S. I'm thinking I may grab a motel room Thursday night because I'm leaving right after work to go up there and a nice hot shower would be a much welcomed luxury before that weekend gets rolling. I'll probably stay at the grounds Friday and Saturday.

Oh and for those that don't visit or aren't members, the tentative Friday schedule is to meet at the trailhead around 10:00. It seems late but it's to allow time for those not getting there Thursday to make it with the group Friday. Plus it's going to be more of a scouting run for Saturday.

Drake
05-11-2009, 08:57 AM
It will be the usual 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. start I would imagine. As for trail lead, won't know until Friday if not Saturday morning once we see who all makes it. I'm thinking the crappy weather may deter some of the ones that weren't definites but I'm thinking it's still going to be 15 to 20 rigs at least.

TN4x4Xterra
05-11-2009, 09:39 AM
Well, I'm going but my X is out of commission...stopped by the Hummer dealership after work to have them look at the steering system and they gave me a list of what was wrong with the CL as being number one needing replacing because it was "slightly" bent which surprised me so I asked them to show me that and couldn't really tell much but obviously my steering is shot and ball joints are completely destroyed as I already knew that and the mechanic asked about the new TREs/TRAs and I showed him the old ones and he was surprised they didn't go before the CL did but anyways, I'm going on trip but X stays in the parking lot until the upgraded CL comes in which is doubtful before the run.

Anybody got an open seat since Daniel has a full vehicle?

Drake
05-11-2009, 10:40 AM
I would say I will have room but with the amount of gear I'm going to be carrying, my front seat my be where I have to put my cooler. I told Tuff if he isn't able to get his X trail ready then he could ride with me but he isn't sure if he's going to stay the whole time. If I have the room and Tuff doesn't go, you are welcome to ride with me.

I have two surprises in the works but the weather has yet to let up where I can get them finished. Nothing special but it will definitely help my storage/shelter situation.

Come on up anyways because I'm sure out of the group, somebody is going to have an open seat.

Well I've been on the NOAS board for almost a year, but since it's my first NOAS run Drake can confirm trail time better than me. Just got a reply from Brian (Houdini) and he said for all those attending Saturday, to be in the campground by no later than 9:30 to group up and hit the trails. The reason not to meet at the Snack Shack is there are so many access trails into CC and it cuts out a lot of driving time for those that want to get into the north end of the park.

If you have a cb, monitor channel 19 (preset common channel) and start squawking if you're running late or just miss the group at the campground. I'm sure we will switch to a quiet channel once we hit the trails but I'll make sure at least a couple of people are listening on 19. Daniel and Stevin, you guys have my cell so if you have trouble just hit me up.

Alright, I'll be there at 9ish and I'll stop by the Snack Shack to get my pass before I head to the campgrounds....

Just to be sure....its the road on your right upon entering the park that you pretty much travel a narrow gravel road for about 2 miles from the snack shack and campground is on the left, right?

Drake
05-12-2009, 06:15 PM
Yep. That's the one. Make sure you stick your pass where it can be seen because they patrol that road a lot. There's ungated access to the park off of that road that takes you to #16 (very fun) and then up into the north end of CC.

I'm getting nervous now because not only has it not stopped raining for me to do anything to my X but it also threw a small tantrum today on my way to work. I'm praying it's just time to replace the spark plugs. Got a bad hesitation in acceleration and it has me quite concerned. Fuel mileage also went to shit as well. It's either plugs or some crappy gas. Hoping it's the latter. But again... can't friggin' look to see what it is because it won't quit raining!!! I'm so sick of rain it isn't funny.

TN4x4Xterra
05-12-2009, 06:51 PM
Alright, I'll get the pass before I head to the campgrounds.

Do I need to take the pass with me when I ride shotty with Sean? Or can I just leave it in the X in the front of the windshield at campgrounds in plain view so I don't get towed or ticketed by the patrol there....?

It REALLY sucks that I'm not able to take it wheeling this time with the NOAS crew....I had so much fun last December and was amped about this but my steering system has me really concerned for a while and I already have a CL on order since I have already replaced the TREs/TRAs.

At least I'm going is what counts right now and I'll get to see some cool rigs in person.

Drake

It looks like Tuff is going to bring his X out. He didn't say if it was wheelable or not or whether or not he's going to attempt the trails but at least we will finally get to see his beast up close.

I've got a ton of packing and tooling to do tonight after work and it looks like I'll be doing all of it in the friggin' rain. I'm considering renting a bunkhouse there just to stow away all of the stuff I won't need on the trails and free up some room in my X. Otherwise it's going to be damn near claustrophobic.

Bummer man, My Ex-wife put a damper on my plans for getting out there early Saturday. My son has baseball pictures Sat morning at 8:30 and then practice after that. If I didn't take him I would never hear the end of it. So now my plan is to ether come up there Sat afternoon and try and hook you with you guys or come up early Sunday. But more that likely I be there Sat afternoon. Sorry Stevin if you can squeeze in with Drake or someone until I get their.
Damn Ex-wife :usuck:

Bummer man, Was wanting to see how 2nd gen does offroad, haha but it's all good!

Drake - if you got room and Daniel still has a full car, I'll hitch a ride with you if nobody has an open seat.

Daniel - Have you talked to Justin recently? I've tried to get ahold of him but no avail.

When I get there Saturday evening you can still ride with me. Depending on the weather we may just camp out Sat night or drive 30 min back home and come back out Sunday morning.

There will be lots of nice rigs, and you'll have that opportunity Stevin, if you want you can hop in LA RANA for a trail or two, I'd also recommend riding with Brock for a spell...his 1st gen SAS truggy is one real bad@ss monster

Loaded up and ready to roll! Weather looks crappy but then again, I don't think I've ever been up there and it not rain.

I've got so much stuff in my X right now it isn't funny. Hoping the campground is somewhat monitored so I can leave a lot of the non-necessities at the campsite just to free up a little room.

Also noticed while swapping my tires yesterday that the bushings are shot in my idler arm. I've got a spare with me and hopefully I can get a break in the rain to swap it out really quick. Otherwise, I'll just destroy it on the trail and swap it then.

See you guys there!
